Preliminary work
- Refer to DISCONNECTING ALL BATTERY GROUND LEADS .

Prerequisite
BATTERY GROUND LEADS are disconnected.
Removing the starter on vehicles with all-wheel drive
WARNING:

- Perform all work only on components that have cooled down.
WARNING:
Working on 12 V electrical system.

- Make sure that there is no charger connected to the jump start terminal in the engine compartment.
- Detach battery ground lead from battery.
- For auxiliary batteries: Detach battery minus cables from all auxiliary batteries.
NOTE:
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
When removing the starter, ensure that the lower acoustic cover is not damaged.
A damaged lower acoustic cover can only be replaced when the front axle is lowered.

- Version 1:
Loosen nut (1).
Unlock plug connection (2) and disconnect.
- Loosen clamps (1).
- Thread out positive battery cable (2) and set it aside.
- Version 2:
Release the nut (1) and remove the positive battery cable from the starter.
Release the nut (2) and remove the cable (terminal 50) from the starter.
Release the clamps (3) and set the cable aside.
Release the positive battery cable from the clamp (4) and place it aside.
- Release the expanding rivets (1) at the rear of the acoustic cover.
- Loosen clip (2).
- Release the expanding rivets (1) at the front of the acoustic cover.
- Release the expanding rivet (1) in the center of the acoustic cover.
- Make sure that the acoustic cover (1) is not damaged.
- Carefully push the acoustic cover (1) aside.
- Loosen screws (2).
- Carefully guide the starter (3) out in the direction of the arrow and remove.
