Removing starter motor
Preliminary work
- Refer to DEACTIVATING THE 48 V ELECTRICAL SYSTEM .
- Refer to DISCONNECTING ALL BATTERY GROUND LEADS .
- Refer to REMOVING THE CENTER UNDERBODY PROTECTION .
- Refer to REMOVING REAR UNDERBODY PROTECTION .
Prerequisite
BATTERY GROUND LEADS are disconnected.
Removing the starter on vehicles with rear-wheel drive
WARNING:
Hot surfaces.

- Perform all work only on components that have cooled down.
WARNING:
Working on 12 V electrical system.

- Make sure that there is no charger connected to the jump start terminal in the engine compartment.
- Detach battery ground lead from battery.
- For auxiliary batteries: Detach battery minus cables from all auxiliary batteries.
NOTE:
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
When removing the starter, ensure that the lower acoustic cover is not damaged.
A damaged lower acoustic cover can only be replaced when the front axle is lowered.

- Version 1:
Release the nut (1) and remove the positive battery cable from the starter.
Release the nut (2) and remove the cable (terminal 50) from the starter.
Release the clamps (3) and set the cable aside.
Disconnect the positive battery cable from the clamps (4) and lay to one side.
- Version 2:
Loosen nut (1).
Unlock plug connection (2) and disconnect.
- Loosen clamps (1).
- Guide the positive battery cable (2) out of the holder (arrow) and set aside.
- Release the expanding rivets (1).
- Undo Christmas tree clip (1).
- Hold down expanding rivets (1) on the left-hand side in area (2) and turn to loosen.
- Release the expanding rivet (1).
- Loosen expanding rivet (1).
- Guide out and set aside the acoustic cover (2) of the oil pan.
- Make sure that the acoustic cover (1) is not damaged.
- Carefully push the acoustic cover (1) aside.
- Loosen screws (2).
- Carefully guide the starter (3) out in the direction of the arrow and remove.
