31 60 004 Removing and installing/replacing right output shaft (all-wheel drive vehicle)
Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove right FRONT WHEEL .
- Disconnect BATTERY NEGATIVE LEAD .
To identify the engine, note the next two images.
TU0 Engine: Positive battery cable (2) and terminal 50 (1) on the starter motor are not protected against contact.
TU1 Engine: Positive battery cable (2) and terminal 50 (1) on the starter motor are protected against contact.
Removal:
If installed: Lever off protective cap (1).
Release collar bolt (1), press brake pedal to floor for this purpose.
Secure output shaft against falling out.
Turn steering wheel to right.
Pull the output shaft (1) out of the swivel bearing.
Lever the output shaft (2) out with a mounting lever (1) and remove it from the side.
Installation:
Install retaining ring (1).
Parts: Circlip
Turn steering wheel to right.
Connect the output shaft (1) from the side.
- Check the output shaft for correct locking.
Insert output shaft (1) from the front into the pivot bearing.
- Pay attention to installation position of compression spring (2).
- Keep collar bolt and front gearing of wheel bearing/output shaft clean and free of grease
Parts: Replace collar bolt and compression spring.
Tighten collar bolt (1) and compression spring by hand.
- Spur gearing of wheel bearing (1) and output shaft (2) must be installed form-fit (tooth in tooth position)!
Check whether spur gearing is locked tooth in tooth by reciprocally rotating wheel hub/output shaft.
When the positive locking is ensured, tighten the collar bolt.
Tightening torque 31 60 2AZ
Thinly grease the wheel hub in area (1).
Do not install the protective cap.
Required follow-up work:
- Install FRONT RIGHT WHEEL .
- Connect BATTERY EARTH LEAD .
