What's New :
- This Delivery Stop is now an Emissions Recall
- Parts, and Claim Information sections updated
Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer delivery In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure the next time the vehicle is in the shop if the campaigns have a status of remedy available. Otherwise, please release the vehicle.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
Vehicles which require this campaign to be completed will show it as "Open" when checked either in AIR, AWP, Campaign Summary or Warranty Vehicle Inquiry.
Please make sure you check your dealer inventory as soon as possible. As of April 16, 2024, you can see a list of affected vehicles in Inventory Campaign Details (ICD) under ROSS.
SITUATION
Under certain driving situations, coolant leaks onto the fuel injectors on cylinder bank (5-8).
BMW AG has issued a Delivery Stop (effective April 15, 2024) on certain Model Year 2018 - 2023 BMW vehicles that were produced between November 7, 2017, and September 9, 2022.
Do not deliver to a customer, a New, Certified Pre-Owned or Used vehicle subject to a Delivery Stop, until the vehicle is repaired. Do not use or sell replacement equipment/parts subject to a Delivery Stop.
CAUSE
The coolant expansion tank may develop a leak over the service life of the vehicle. This leak may damage the fuel injectors on the driver's side cylinder bank 2 (cylinders 5-8) which are located nearly directly beneath the tank.
CORRECTION
Check the part number of the expansion tank and, if necessary, replace the tank.
PROCEDURE
- Follow Repair Instruction 17 11 100 Removing and installing/replacing coolant expansion tank
and loosen/lift up the tank to access the underside of the tank to read out the part number.NOTE: At this point no coolant needs to be drained to access the part number.
Check the tank for part number (P/N) 17 13 7 889 450 (1).
In this photo, the P/N is 17 13 8 090 271.
If the P/N is...7 889 450, check that there are no signs of coolant leaking from the tank. If there are no signs of coolant leaking from the tank (e.g., seams leaking/split, no overspill from refilling/loose cap), no further action is necessary. Reinstall the tank. Continue to Step 2.
If any other P/N is observed such as in the photo above, replace the tank per the Repair Instruction 17 11 100 Removing and installing/replacing coolant expansion tank. Continue to Step 2.
- Check fuel injectors on cylinders 5 - 8 for any signs of coolant contamination (may require the use of a borescope). Replace any injectors (up to 4) with signs of coolant contamination.
Coolant contamination on a fuel injector (1).
