Installing the counterbalance shafts (B48 setting with spring balance)
Intermediate wheel and drive wheels of the counterbalance shafts
Precondition
Crankshaft is positioned in lower dead center of the first cylinder.
Damage of the engine and installed parts.
Non-compliance with the instructions for mounting and disassembly may lead to damage to the engine and installed parts.
- Comply with the regulations for the installation and disassembly.
- Perform work with vehicle care.
The sequence of the steps must be observed and followed.
Install counterbalance shafts
- Follow repair instructions!
- Mount the sprocket (1)
on the intake side
so that the marks are perpendicular
to the sealing surface (2)
of the oil pan (upward).
The intake side on the gear of the sprocket (1) is marked with a (I) .
- Make sure that the sprockets are not confused.
The sprocket (1) is marked with the mark (2) (I) and must be installed on the intake side .
- Replace the sprocket (1)
on the intake side.
Parts: Drive wheel
- Feed in the sprocket (1)
of the intake side
and install it.
- Mount the sprocket on the exhaust side so that the marks (1) are perpendicular to the sealing surface of the oil pan (upwards).
- Replace the sprocket on the exhaust side
.
Parts: Drive wheel
- Feed in the sprocket on the exhaust side
and install it.NOTE: The description is provided only at one component. The procedure is the same for all other components.
- Screw the special tool 2 466 729
hand-tight into the counterbalance shafts.NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Complete the following steps with the help of a support person. - Carefully insert the counterbalance shafts (1) onto the crankcase in the arrow direction.
- Ensure that the labeling (2)
of the output shafts (1)
points upwards.
The special tool 2 288 054 can thus be positioned more easily.
- Carefully
insert the counterbalance shafts (1)
onto the crankcase in the arrow direction.
The labeling (2) must not point downwards.
- Position the counterbalance shafts using the special tool 2 466 729
correctly.NOTE: The description is provided only at one component. The procedure is the same for all other components.
- Observe the correct fit of special tool 2 288 054
in the guides (1)
of counterbalance shaft (2)
.
- Mount the special tool 2 288 054
and abut the screws (1).
Check
- Check whether the marks of the idler gear are positioned perpendicular
to the sealing surface (1)
of the oil pan and position the idler correctly
, as required.
Result
» Marks are perpendicular to the sealing surface (1) of the oil pan.
Measure
- Carry out the following step.
- Tighten special tool 2 288 054
.TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Special tool 2 288 054 to crankshaft tightening torque 20 Nm - Remove special tool 2 466 729
.NOTE: Schematic diagram is for example purposes. Some parts may differ in certain details.
- Tighten down screws (1)
.TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Drive wheel to counterbalance shafts Screw Replace screws. 1. Tightening torque 20 Nm 2. Angle of rotation 180° - Replace the idler gear (1)
.
Parts: Intermediate wheel
- Feed in and install the idler gear (1) .
- Mount the idler gear (1)
so that the QR code and the mark is perpendicular
to the sealing surface of the oil pan (upwards).
- Tighten the nut (1) hand-tight.
- Release the nut (1)
until the idler gear can be moved.
Check
- Check whether the marks of the driving gear are positioned perpendicular
to the sealing surface (1)
of the oil pan and position the driving gears correctly
, as required.
Result
» Marks are perpendicular to the sealing surface (1) of the oil pan.
Measure
- Carry out the following step.
- Unscrew the bolts (1) and remove the special tool 2 288 054
.
- Prepare a commercially available spring balance (1)
.NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Complete the following steps with the help of a support person. - Fit the wrench (1) on the screw of the counterbalance shaft on the exhaust side.
- Fasten the spring balance (2)
with a cable strap (3)
onto the wrench (1)
.
- Pretension the spring balance in the arrow direction.TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
