Installing the crankshaft (B48 setting with spring balance)
CAUTION:
Heavy component.
Heavy components can lead to injury or damage.
Heavy components can lead to injury or damage.
- Remove and install heavy components with the aid of another person/other persons.
- Insert and install the crankshaft (1).NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
The crankshaft bearing cap, main bearing shell and guide bearing shell are aligned with each other.
Always install the crankshaft bearing cap, main bearing shells and guide bearing shells in the cylinder from which they were removed. - Observe numbering on the main bearing cap.
- Position the main bearing cap.
- Tighten the screws in the sequence (1) - (10).
TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATION

Checking the crankshaft side clearance
Check
- Attach the dial gauge 0 493 144 (11 6 251) with the tripod 0 493 145 (11 6 252) to the engine and measure the side clearance of the crankshaft.
TECHNICAL DATA SPECIFICATION
| Axial clearance of the crankshaft B42/B46/B48 | ||
| min. 0.060 mm | ||
| max. 0.250 mm |
Result
» The side clearance is exceeded.
Measure
- Replace worn components.
- Feed out a lint-free cleaning cloth (1) between the counterbalance shaft (2) on the intake side and crankcase (3) and remove it.
- Make sure that the needle bearing (4) is not
damaged.
- Move or adjust the crankshaft (2) to the TDC setting .
- Position counterbalance shaft (1) of inlet side on the crankshaft (2) in arrow direction .
- The mark on the gear (1) of the intake for the counterbalance shaft must point upwards, vertical
to the oil sump sealing surface (3).
- Replace the screw (1).
Parts: Screw
- Screw the screw (1) into the counterbalance shafts of the inlet side.
- Do not
tighten screw (1) as otherwise it may not be possible to position the counterbalance shafts in the next step.
- Rotate the crankshaft to the TDC of the first cylinder .
- Mount the special tool 2 288 054
and abut the screws (1).NOTE: The description is provided only at one component. The procedure is the same for all other components.
- Observe the correct fit of special tool 2 288 054 in the guides (1) of counterbalance shafts (2).
- If necessary, turn the crankshaft slightly.
Check
- Check whether the marks of the idler gear are positioned perpendicular
to the sealing surface (1) of the oil pan and position the idler correctly
, as required.
Result
» Marks are perpendicular to the sealing surface (1) of the oil pan.
Measure
- Carry out the following step.
- Tighten special tool 2 288 054
.TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATION
Special tool 2 288 054 to crankshaft tightening torque 20 Nm - Tighten the screw (1) of the counterbalance shaft for the intake side.TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATION
Drive wheel to counterbalance shafts Screw
Replace screws.1. Tightening torque 20 Nm 2. Angle of rotation 180° - Replace the idler gear (1).
Parts: Intermediate wheel
- Feed in and install the idler gear (1).
- Mount the idler gear (1) so that the QR code and the mark is perpendicular
to the sealing surface of the oil pan (upwards).
- Tighten the nut (1) hand-tight.
- Release the nut (1) until the idler gear can be moved.
Check
- Check whether the marks of the driving gear are positioned perpendicular
to the sealing surface (1) of the oil pan and position the driving gears correctly
, as required.
Result
» Marks are perpendicular to the sealing surface (1) of the oil pan.
Measure
- Carry out the following step.
- Loosen screws (1).
- Guide the special tool 2 288 054
out and remove.
- Prepare a commercially available spring balance (1).NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Complete the following steps with the help of a support person. - Fit the wrench (1) on the screw of the counterbalance shaft on the exhaust side.
- Fasten the spring balance (2) with a cable strap (3) onto the wrench (1).
- Pretension the spring balance in the arrow direction.TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATION
Preloading the spring balance to tighten the idler gear Spring balance Preload 30-40N - Move the idler gear (1) onto the driving gear of the counterbalance shaft and the crankshaft in the arrow direction up to the stop.
- Tighten the idler gear (1).TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATION
Idler gear to crankcase M12X1.5 1. Tightening torque 10 Nm 2. Angle of rotation 45° - Turn the crankshaft using special tool 0 493 380 (11 6 480) by 90 degrees in the arrow direction.
- Move the driving gear of counterbalance shaft on the intake side
back and forth in the arrow direction.
The backlash between the gears must be audible and perceptible.
- Move the idler gear of the counterbalance shaft on the exhaust side
back and forth in the arrow direction.
The backlash between the gears must be audible and perceptible.
The backlash on the exhaust side should be similar to the backlash on the intake side.
- Replace the sealing cap (1).
Parts: Sealing cap
- Make sure the O-rings of the sealing cap (1) are fitted correctly.
- Mount both sealing caps (1).
