61 21 010 Remove and install (replace) vehicle battery
The following points must be strictly observed prior to starting work:
DE-ENERGIZE THE HIGH-VOLTAGE SYSTEM
Observe SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS ON HANDLING HYBRID OR ELECTRIC VEHICLES
Follow the notes for NOTES FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING THE VEHICLE BATTERY .
Follow instructions on NOTES ON INTELLIGENT BATTERY SENSOR (IBS) .
To ensure the correct safety and convenience functions, install only the original vehicle battery (battery size and type) stored in the vehicle order. OBSERVE NOTE ON BATTERY REPLACEMENT .
Preliminary work needed:
- Refer to REMOVING FRONT LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT WELL .
- Refer to CLAMPING OFF BATTERY LEAD FROM NEGATIVE CONNECTION POINT .
Fold back cover (1).
Slacken off nut (2) (the adjacent nut may not be slackened off or released).
Tightening torque 61 21 1AZ .
Remove safety battery terminal (3) towards top, lay to one side and fix in position.
Loosen screws.
Tightening torque 61 21 5AZ .
Remove retainers (1).
Detach vent hose.
Remove the vehicle battery (2).
Installation note:
Make sure the vehicle battery (2) is properly fitted in the mount.
Installation note:
The battery has two vent holes:
- One vent hole (1) must be closed correctly with a dummy plug.
- The vent hose (3) must be connected correctly at the other vent hole (2).
Always install the vent hose (3) with a downhill gradient to the outside!
No siphon formation!
Replacement:
- Remount both terminal adapters.
- REGISTER BATTERY REPLACEMENT .
Pay attention when replacing the vehicle battery or if a terminal adapter is loose!
Check on vehicles with production date up to 03/2014 if a screw with microencapsulation or with the screw locking agent Loctite was used. If not, proceed as follows:
- Remove current screw.
- Check the thread in the battery terminal for damage. If the thread is damaged, install new terminal adapter.
- Use screw with microencapsulation (part number: 9 908 730).
- Alternatively, apply screw locking agent Loctite 270 on the current screw.
