Use the following procedure to assess scratches:
| Result of visual inspection: | Measures | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Step 1: | Visual inspection of damaged area | protruding carbon fibers | Replace component. |
| no protruding carbon fibers (glass fibers and threads of polyethylene may protrude) | continue with step 2 | ||
| Step 2: | Analysis of angle between direction of scratch and direction of fiber | 15°- 90° | continue with step 3 |
| 0° - 15° | continue with step 5 | ||
| Step 3: | Determine depth of scratch | Depth < 0.2 mm | Do not replace component. |
| Depth >0.2 mm | continue with step 4 | ||
| Step 4: | Determine length of scratch | Length < 10 mm | Do not replace component. |
| Length: >10 mm | Replace component. | ||
| Step 5: | Determine depth of scratch | Depth < 0.2 mm | Do not replace component. |
| Depth >0.2 mm | continue with step 6 | ||
| Step 6: | Determine length of scratch | Length < 40 mm | Do not replace component. |
| Length: >40 mm | Replace component. |
Determining depth of scratch:
A special tool 83 30 2 355 745 is needed to determine scratch depth.
The tool can only be used on a flat surface.
Gauge 2 355 746 has a test probe (1) with a height of 0.2 mm.
When the test probe is at the deepest point of the scratch (Figure A), it can be moved to the left and right. The scratch is less than 0.2 mm deep.
If the test probe goes so far into the scratch that the gage lies flat (Figure B), the scratch is deeper than 0.2 mm, and there is damage.
The rest of the steps are in the table.
