Removing and installing/replacing air spring, left or right (X6 M)

WARNING: Injury hazard! 
Before performing any work on the air supply system, pipes and air springs, it is mandatory to vent the air spring system!
If this order is ignored, there is an injury hazard!

Risk of damage! 

Extreme cleanliness must be ensured at the connection area of the pipes during disassembly and installation. Even the smallest of dirt particles can cause leakage in the air spring system.

NOTE: Observe the NOTES ON THE AIR SPRING SYSTEM .
In a warranty case, you must always provide a fault memory printout with the defective part even if no entry is stored in the fault memory!

Preliminary work needed: 

Attention! 

No tools may be used to disassemble the lower section (1) of the air spring.

Bend the lower section (1) of the air spring forward/sideways by hand.

Press the air spring (1) upwards and twist it by 30° (A) in counterclockwise direction.

Attention! 

Do not kink, twist or crush the pipe!

Compress the air spring (1), remove it sideways and place it on the control arm.

Release banjo bolt (1).

Seal the pipe (2) and air spring connector with adhesive tape.

NOTE: The banjo bolt (1) remains on the pipe (2).

Attention! 

Cutting the protective bellows open for leading the pipe (with banjo bolt) through is prohibited! 

Dismantle the protective bellows (1) from the air spring.

Unclip the pipe (2) from the groove of the upper section of the air spring.

Remove the air spring.

For reusing: Check the protective bellows (1) for damage.

NOTE: The protective bellows (1) may be reinstalled despite a stretched-out opening (for pipe with banjo bolt).

If the protective bellows are damaged: Pull the pipe (2) with the banjo bolt through the opening in the protective bellows (1).

Check the air spring for damage, replace if necessary.

Check the pipe for damage, replace if necessary.

When replacing the air spring: 

Attention! 

Replace the protective bellows only in the event of damage.

Cutting the protective bellows open for leading the pipe (with banjo bolt) through is prohibited!

Wet the protective bellows (1) at the opening of the pipe with water/soap solution.

Push the pipe (2) with the banjo bolt through the opening in the protective bellows (1).

Attention! 

In case of replacement only:  Unscrew the banjo bolt from the air spring connection and dispose.

Check the banjo bolt (1) for contamination and clean if applicable. Then carefully screw in the banjo bolt by hand to prevent damage to the plastic thread and thus to the air spring.

Tightening torque, 37 12 1AZ .

Clip the pipe (2) into the groove of the upper section of the air spring.

Align the protective bellows (1) with the upper section of the air spring using the opening for the pipe (2) and install.

Attention! 

Do not kink, twist or crush the pipe! 

Insert the air spring (1) into the mounting cup or side member and twist it clockwise as far as it will go.

Check the air spring (1) for correct fit in the mounting cup or side member. Correct if necessary.

Attention! 

No tools may be used to install the lower section (1) of the air spring.

Press the lower section (1) of the air spring by hand into the wheel carrier until it engages audibly.

NOTE: While doing so, pay attention to the correct alignment of the orientation lug with the groove in the wheel carrier.

Check the air spring for even formation of the rolling fold (1).

Move the rolling fold (1) downwards by hand if necessary and form it on the lower section of the air spring (2).

Attention! 

Risk of damage to the air springs! 

Do not let the vehicle rest on its wheels while the air springs are empty.

The wheels must be suspended free of load.

Load on the empty air springs can damage them! 

After installation: 

NOTE: Observing the sequence for activating and filling the air spring system is mandatory!
