Function principle and target values

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2017 BMW X3, 2016 BMW X3, 2015 BMW X3, 2014 BMW X3, and 2013 BMW X3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Without vacuum, the bypass flap is closed, i.e.: The exhaust flows through the exhaust-gas recirculation cooler. If a partial vacuum is applied, the bypass flap opens the bypass and simultaneously closes the inlet to the EGR cooler. The exhaust gas is routed past the EGR cooler directly to the intake air collector. The bypass of the EGR cooling is opened during EGR operation if the coolant temperature is lower than 50 °C.
