Removing and installing/replacing the brake pads of both front disc brakes (carbon ceramic brakes)

Special tools required: 

Attention! 

It is imperative that you follow the GENERAL INFORMATION  on handling the carbon ceramic brake (CSiC).

Before installing the new brake pads, check the carbon ceramic brake discs for wear.

Attention! 

So as not to damage the surface coating, if possible do not mechanically clean the guide surfaces for the brake pads on the brake caliper mounting bracket, but rather clean with brake cleaner BMW Tl. Clean number 8319 2154 780. 

Necessary preliminary work: 

Attention! 

Impact stresses and impacts with hard tools can lead to damage/edge chipping of the carbon ceramic brake discs!

Drive out locking pins (1) in direction of arrow.

Installation note: 

When inserting the retaining pin, the brake pad must be pressed against the spring force of the retaining spring!

Attention! 

Use of screwdrivers or mounting levers to push back the pistons is not permitted. Failure to adhere to this instruction leads causes damage to the edges of the carbon ceramic brake disc.

When pressing down piston, note brake fluid level in expansion tank.

Overflowing brake fluid will damage the paintwork.

Turn piston back fully with special tool 34 1 050.

Attention! 

Never undo screws (1) on brake caliper.

Release screws (1).

Pull brake caliper (2) back as far as the brake hose will permit.

Attention! 

Do not allow brake caliper to hang from brake hose; attach brake caliper from above.

Installation note: 

Tightening torque 34 11 2AZ .

Feed the brake pads (2) out of the brake caliper (1).

Attention! 

When installing the brake pads:

Mark any worn brake pads.

In the event of one-sided brake pad wear, do not change brake pads round.

Observe minimum thickness of brake pads.

Installation note: 

Clean brake pads, brake caliper and guide pins.

Do not grease backs of brake pads sleeve.

Brake pads must be correctly seated on guide pins.

Attention!

Do not grease brake pads and guides with brake pad paste. 

Do not spray carbon ceramic brake disc with brake cleaner! 

Cover the brake discs when cleaning brake calipers with brake cleaner, and pull the brake calipers off the stud bolt, if required. 

Clean contact surface (1) of brake pistons with brake cleaner.

Attention! 

Do not grease contact surfaces (1) with brake shoe paste. 

Do not spray carbon ceramic brake disc with brake cleaner! 

Cover the brake discs when cleaning brake calipers with brake cleaner, and pull the brake calipers off the stud bolt, if required. 

Clean contact surface (1) of brake caliper with brake cleaner.

NOTE: After completion of the repair:
  • When installing brake pads on front and rear axles, the brake fluid level must be topped up to the "max." mark.
  • Fully depress brake pedal several times so that brake pads contact brake discs.
  • Read and comply with notes on BREAKING-IN NEW BRAKE DISCS/BRAKE PADS .
  • When exchanging brake pads, reset CBS display in accordance with factory specification.
