Removing and installing/replacing rear window (2016-2022)

The following notes form the basis for these repair instructions and must be adhered to at all times:

- Follow GENERAL PROCEDURE FOR DISMANTLING/INSTALLATION OF AFFIXED WINDOW GLASS
When reusing the rear window :
Avoid damaging lines for heated rear window/- aerial.
The following new parts/ consumables are required (sourcing reference BMW Parts Department).

Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove TRIM PANEL FOR ROOF PILLAR at rear (C-pillar) left/right
- Remove AUXILIARY BRAKE LIGHT .
Removal:
Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.
If necessary, release the cable holder (2).
Secure the cable on the rear window with adhesive tape.
Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.
Secure the cable on the rear window with adhesive tape.
Secure the tailgate (1) in a semi-open position with the tensioning strap (2).
Tape off area (A) on the left/right with the yellow plastic adhesive tape.
Attention!
Tape off the body in the area of the piercing point with fabric adhesive tape (risk of damage).
Slide the wire and/or string through the adhesive bead at the line (1).
Do not damage the sealant on the body while inserting the wire/string.
Cut out rear window.
Installation:
Fitting spacer buffers (spacers):
Attention!
Spacer buffers are installed to prevent rear window breakage.
Completely remove the damaged spacer buffers (1).
Bond new spacer buffers (1) to the marks (2).

Set the bead joint in the area (1).
Installation note:
Carefully perform the following steps with the rear window (1) using a suction lifter:
- Feed in under tailgate
- Mount on top and insert
- Center rear window to distances (A) and (B)
- secure in this position with yellow plastic adhesive tapes
A = 3.5 ± 1 mm
B = 4 ±1 mm
Preload on top of windscreen to prevent wind noise:
Rear window (1) must be lower than roof outer skin (2). This is the only way to prevent wind noises.
Position special tool 51 0 010 in center of vehicle depending on dimension (A) and check underprotrusion of rear window (1).
A = 2.5 ± 0.8 mm
X = Measurement stages 1... 4 mm
Connect the connector (1).
Connect the connector (1).
Clip in the cable clip (2) as needed.
Remove the adhesive tape from the area (A) on the left/right.
Remove the tensioning strap (2).
Required follow-up work:
- Install the TRIM PANEL FOR THE ROOF PILLAR (C-pillar) left/right
- Install the AUXILIARY STOP LAMP .
