Restrictions due to factors inherent in the system

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2017 BMW X3, 2016 BMW X3, 2015 BMW X3, 2014 BMW X3, and 2013 BMW X3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Rain sensor:

Dirt contamination of the sensor surface can lead to unwanted activation, up to and including continuous wiping. If the dirt contamination continues over a longer period, the system reacts with a reduction in sensitivity.

Dirt contamination can be caused by road salt residue, insects or streaks. The windscreen should therefore be cleaned from time to time using the wipe-wash function.

As the wiper cleans the sensor surface, the wiper must not be worn. A worn wiper would negatively affect the sensor's measured values due to streaking.

Formation of bubbles between the silicone gel and the windscreen also has negative effects.

Light sensor:

The light sensor is unable to detect negative influences on sight such as fog, heat haze and smoke.

Due to the state of the art, the automatic driving lights control system can switch on too often when the sky is blue and the sun is low (blue sky effect) and too rarely under very cloudy skies.

The "blue sky effect" is a phenomenon that can occur when the sun is low and the sky is blue and clear at dawn and dusk, especially in winter. In this light situation the sensor detects a lower brightness than the human due to less infrared parts of the ambient light. For this reason the driving light is switched on too early or switched off too late according to human sensitivity. In brightly illuminated tunnel entrances, the switch-on characteristics can be delayed slightly if the brightness values in the tunnel are above the switch-on threshold.
