Safety functions

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2017 BMW X3, 2016 BMW X3, 2015 BMW X3, 2014 BMW X3, and 2013 BMW X3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The engines have a blockage identification as an overload protection for the powertrains. If the drive is blocked, the current in the motor rises. The applicable control unit compares the starting current in normal operation to the current when the drive is blocked. An obstruction ('blocking') is detected by any difference in the current. The motor is no longer driven.

To provide overheating protection for the motor the mirror folding function is locked after it has been working for a total of 45 seconds. If the anti-repeat circuit is active, the electric exterior mirrors can be unfolded once more.

The supply voltage to the electrical exterior mirrors is monitored by the front electronic module (FEM). All electric exterior mirror functions are locked if the voltage drops below 8.5 Volts. As of an vehicle voltage of 9 Volts, the functions are available again.
