11 00 598 Removing and installing engine on front axle (N63O1) with GA8HP70Z all-wheel drive vehicle transmission

Special tools required: 

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Screw fixtures (20) onto table lift at a suitable location.

Move screw adapter (30) with plate (80) up against the transmission oil sump (1).

With Dynamic Drive only 

Release holder (1).

With Dynamic Drive only 

Release holder (1) on power steering pump.

Tightening torque 32 41 14AZ .

With Dynamic Drive only 

Loosen screws (3).

Tightening torque 32 41 13AZ .

Release screw (4).

Tightening torque 32 41 10AZ .

Installation note: 

Align intake pipe by way of marking to power steering pump.

Make sure hydraulic lines are laid without tension and with sufficient distance to adjoining components.

Release screw (1).

Tightening torque 13 62 4AZ.

Remove crankshaft sensor.

Disengage cable from holder (2).

Release screw (1).

Undo hydraulic line and holder.

Release screw (1).

Tightening torque 17 22 1AZ .

Disconnect hydraulic lines (2) to transmission oil cooler.

Release screw (1).

Loosen the hydraulic lines (2).

Installation note: 

Replace sealing rings.

Note installation position.

Recycling: 

Catch and dispose of escaping oil with auxiliary materials.

Crank engine at vibration damper in direction of rotation until screw (1) is visible in recess.

Undo all 6 bolts on torque converter.

Tightening torque 24 40 1AZ .

Insert special tool 24 4 131 , 24 4 138 into recess in transmission housing.

Lock the torque converter by tightening the special tool.

IMPORTANT: Do not  release wishbone from swivel bearing with impact tool.
Make sure special tool rests correctly on steel bush of swivel bearing. The swivel bearing must be removed if the steel bushing moves.
Rubber boot of wishbone must not be damaged!
Do not pull stainless steel ring off journal.

Slacken nut (1) two to three thread turns.

If necessary, replace lower section 31 2 242 with lower section 31 2 247.

Press wishbone (2) with special tool 31 2 240) off swivel bearing.

Unscrew nut (1) and remove wishbone (2) from swivel bearing.

Installation note: 

Keep wishbone to swivel bearing connection clean and free from oil and grease.

Replace self-locking nut.

Tightening torque 31 12 4AZ .

Slacken nut (1) two to three thread turns.

If necessary, replace lower section 31 2 242 with lower section 31 2 247.

Press tension strut (2) with special tool 31 2 240 off swivel bearing.

Unscrew nut (1) and remove tension strut (2) from swivel bearing.

Installation note: 

Keep tension strut to swivel bearing connection clean and free from oil and grease.

Replace self-locking nut.

Tightening torque 31 12 2AZ .

Slacken nut (1) two to three thread turns.

If necessary, replace lower section 31 2 242 with lower section 31 2 246.

Press track rod end (2) with special tool 31 2 240 off swivel bearing.

Unscrew nut (1) and remove track rod end (2) from swivel bearing.

Installation note: 

Keep track rod end to swivel bearing connection clean and free from oil and grease.

Replace self-locking nut.

Tightening torque 32 21 3AZ .

Remove swivel bearing (1) with brake disc and drive shaft (3) with the aid of a workshop crane (2).

Do not bend output shaft (3) too far, note deflection angle.

The illustration shows the procedure on the left swivel bearing; the procedure on the right swivel bearing is identical.

Release screw (1).

Lay ground strap (2) to one side.

Loosen screws.

Tightening torque 24 00 1AZ .

Disconnect transmission.

Slightly raise engine with workshop crane and special tool 11 0 020 .

This simplifies removal and installation of transmission.

Disconnect transmission (2) from engine in the direction of arrow.

Unscrew nuts (1).

Raise engine.

Installation note: 

Replace self-locking nuts.

Tightening torque 22 11 2AZ .

Lift engine (1) with workshop crane (2) and special tool 11 0 020 from front axle.

Mount engine on assembly stand. See 11 00 MOUNTING ENGINE ON ASSEMBLY STAND (N63O1) .
