Replacing left or right track rod

Special tools required: 

IMPORTANT: The steering box must be replaced if the polished surface of the rack is damaged (e.g. by corrosion)!
IMPORTANT: When the track rod is replaced due to an accident, it is absolutely necessary to replace the SWIVEL BEARING !

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Removal: 

Slacken nut (1).

Release the track rod end (2) from the swivel bearing.

Determine dimension (A) to simplify following adjustment of front axle.

Slacken bolt (1).

Unscrew track rod end.

Clean track rod.

Undo clamp (1) and clamp (2).

Detach gaiter from track rod.

IMPORTANT: To avoid damage to rack and to suspension mounting, move rack in as far as possible.

Undo the joint (1) using special tools 32 3 160 at the steering box rack.

Installation: 

Clean rack and check surface for damage (e.g. by corrosion).

IMPORTANT: To avoid damage to rack and to suspension mounting, move rack in as far as possible.

Tighten joint (1) to the steering gear rack using special tool 32 3 160.

Tightening torque 32 21 1AZ .

Slacken clamping bolt (1) and screw off track rod end.

Grease the track rod on the taper using "FB-1 part number 2 208 093" grease.

Pull the gaiter onto the track rod.

Mount the EAR HOSE CLAMP  (1) and clamp (2).

Screw in track rod end to dimension (A).

Tighten clamping bolt (1).

Tightening torque 32 21 2AZ .

Keep track rod end to swivel bearing connection clean and free from oil and grease.

Insert the track rod end (2) into the swivel bearing.

Part  : Replace nut (1).

Tighten nut (1).

Tightening torque 32 21 3AZ .
