51 37 170 Removing and installing side window glass, rear left or right (Z3 Coupe, M Coupe): Notes

Special tools required: 

CAUTION: The "Instructions for cementing windows" form the basis of these repair instructions and must be followed without fail, refer to 51 31... Instructions on gluing windscreen 

Cover rear side panels with protective covers.

Tape off body on inside around side window with fabric adhesive tape.

Remove breastwork in luggage compartment, front left or right. Refer to 51 47 154 Removing and installing side finisher in luggage compartment at front left or right (Z3coupe, M coupe) .

Remove trim on side window rear left or right. Refer to 51 36 047 Replacing trim on rear left or right door window (Z3 Coupe, M Coupe) .

Remove seal on side window. Refer to 51 71 190 Removing and installing seal on side window (rear), left or right (Z3 Coupe, M Coupe) .

Pull off trim (1) downward.

Installation: 

If applicable, replace defective clips (1).

Attach straight blade with adjustable roller (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service) to tool and set measurement (X).

Dimension (X) = 16 mm

NOTE: Resharpen knife with machine running.

Carefully insert knife blade between body and side window seal.

Guide blade parallel to side window.

Cut through glue bead at top, bottom and front as close to body as possible.

Pull out side window with special tool 51 3 010 at front (2nd person); if necessary, use a scalpel (surgeon's scalpel) to cut through adhesive bead (in area of B-pillar) carefully from outside.

Installation: 

Attach seal (1) in area (A) and position in area (B).

Fix seal (1) with yellow plastic adhesive tape (1) (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service).

Installation: 

Clean adhesive areas and stick on spacer buffers (1) and (2).

For installation, coat connecting flange (3) for seal with rubber protection coating agent.

Installation: 

  1. Mount special tool 51 3 010 (without joint) opposite on inside of window. Attach special tool 51 3 090 (tensioning strap) at top to special tool 51 3 010 (without joint).
  2. Feed in tensioning strap from special tool 51 3 090 at bottom into mounts (1), hook in and tighten down.
