Emergency Tensioning Retractor (ETR) in seat belt assembly contains a gas generator pellet. When air bags deploy, SRS control unit ignites gas generator pellet and forces a piston downward in tube attached to seat belt assembly. Piston has a cable attached to it which pulls on seat belt reel. This increases seat belt tension and holds front seat occupant(s) tightly against seat backrest, increasing seat belt effectiveness. Not all vehicles are equipped with this system.
