Checking camshaft timing (S55 engine)
Special tools required:
- 11 0 300
- 11 4 281
- 11 4 282
- 11 4 285
- 11 9 340
- 00 9 250
- 11 4 284
Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove CYLINDER HEAD COVER .
- Remove INTAKE PLENUM .
Remove fastener (1) in direction of arrow.
Installation note:
Install fastener (1) with bore facing outwards.
Release screw (1) and press the cable clip (2) to one side.
Rotate crankshaft at central bolt into TDC setting.
Slide in special tool 11 0 300 into dowel hole and secure crankshaft.
Release chain tensioner (1).
Tightening torque 11 31 7AZ .
Make sure no engine oil runs onto belt drive.
Installation note:
Replace sealing ring.
Install special tool 11 9 340 at position of chain tensioner.
Pretension timing chain with special tool 11 9 340 00 9 250 0.6 Nm

With 1st cylinder in TDC firing position, cams of intake camshaft (1) point upward at an angle.
With 1st cylinder in TDC firing position, cams of the exhaust camshaft (1) point upwards at an angle.
The timings are correct when part numbers or read code (1) on intake and exhaust camshafts point towards top.
Secure special tool 11 4 285 with screws 11 4 284 to cylinder head.
Place special tool 11 4 281 on intake camshaft.
Place special tool 11 4 281 on exhaust camshaft.
The exhaust camshaft timing is correct when special tool 11 4 281 is slightly in contact to intake side.
The intake camshaft timing is correct when special tool 11 4 281 is slightly in contact to intake side.
Twist special tools 11 4 281 by hand in direction of arrow up to limit position.
Both gauges must lie flat on special tool 11 4 285.
If necessary, adjust VALVE TIMING .
Assemble engine.
