Replacing the safety battery terminal (SBK)

Attention!

Observe the safety regulations.

Investigate the cause for triggering the safety battery terminal!

To do this, read out the fault memory of the airbag control unit. Note the stored fault messages.

Rectify faults. Then delete the fault memory.

Use of the safety battery terminal:

There are different installation locations for the different models:

Battery in engine compartment

The safety battery terminal is replaced with the cable up to the battery remote positive terminal.

From 03/2002, the safety battery terminal is no longer applicable on all E-46 LL models with 4- cylinder engines.

The repair cable always has a standard length.

The high-current connector of the repair cable has a larger diameter than the battery positive wire.

For some series (for example, E46 Sports Wagon), the high-current connector of the repair cable can lead to installation problems.

This is the case if the interface is in the area of the closely fitted trim panel components.

Find a suitable interface (for example, for the E46 Sports Wagon about 10 cm behind the rear seat backrest).

Lay the repair cable parallel to the battery positive wire.

Mark the interface of the battery positive wire at the end of the repair cable.

Disconnect plug connection (2).

Attention!

Do not use a bolt cutter or similar tools to cut through the cable.

A flat pinched cable terminal no longer fits into the sleeve.

Saw through the battery positive wire at the marked point with an iron saw.

Strip off the insulation of the cable terminal by the dimension (A).

Dimension A = 15 mm.

NOTE: The offset of the interface by about 10 cm results in the excess length of the battery positive wire (1).

Lay the battery positive wire (1) free of kinks and without abrasions.
