Removing and installing/replacing starter motor (S55 engine)

Necessary preliminary work: 

• Read out the fault memory of the DME control unit.
• Switch off ignition.
• Disconnect BATTERY NEGATIVE LEAD .
• Remove INTAKE PLENUM .

Removal: 

Release nut (1) and remove positive battery cable. Unlock connector (2) and remove.

Release screws (3) and remove starter motor (4).

Preparation for installation: 

Check starter pinion and ring gear for damage, replace starter motor if necessary.

Installation: 

Install starter motor (4).

Tighten screws (3) on starter motor (4).

Tightening torque 12 41 1AZ .

Tighten positive battery cable and nut (1).

Tightening torque 12 42 2AZ .

Connect and lock connector (2).

Connector (2) must snap audibly into place.

Required reworking: 

• Install INTAKE PLENUM .
• Connect NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE .

Only during starter replacement and on vehicles with MSA (automatic engine start-stop function): 

• Use BMW diagnosis system to reset the starter counter.
