Removing and installing/replacing rear window (M4 Coupe, M4 Convertible)

Special tools required:

Attention! 

The following notes form the basis for these repair instructions and must be adhered to at all times:

• Follow general instructions on window bonding: 

  - See SAFETY AT WORK

  - See TOUCHING UP PAINTWORK DAMAGE

  The vehicle can be towed or driven without a windshield, rear window and side window.

  When carrying out disassembly/installation work and during the hardening time, the vehicle must be standing on its wheels on a level surface.

  The windshield, rear window and side windows are glued to the body. This bonding will increase the torsional rigidity of the vehicle. To obtain perfect bonding, comply with the installation procedure described in the following.

• Follow GENERAL PROCEDURE  for dismantling/installing bonded window glass.

When reusing the rear window: 

Avoid damaging lines for heated rear window/- aerial.

The following new PARTS/MATERIALS  are required:

Rear window (with replacement)	1
Spacer buffer 5x5x20 mm	10
Small repair kit	1

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

• Remove TRIM PANEL FOR ROOF PILLAR  at rear (C-pillar) left/right
• Remove AUXILIARY BRAKE LIGHT .

Unfasten plug connection (1) and disconnect.

Unfasten cable strap (2).

Secure cable to rear window with adhesive tape.

Secure tailgate (1) in half-opened position with tensioning strap (2).

Tape off area (A) on the left/right with yellow plastic adhesive tape.

Attention! 

Tape off body in area of piercing point with fabric adhesive tape (risk of damage).

Slide wire or string at line (1) through adhesive bead.

When sliding in wire/string, do not damage sealant on body.

Fitting spacer buffers (spacers): 

Attention! 

Spacer buffers are installed to avoid rear window breakage.

Completely remove the damaged spacer buffers (1).

Bond new spacer buffer (1) to marks (2).

x = approx. 250 mm (bead joint distance (1) to rear window outer edge)

Installation note: 

Carefully perform the following steps with the rear window (1) using a suction lifter:

• Feed in under tailgate
• Mount on top and insert
• Center rear window to distances (A) and (B)
• secure in this position with yellow plastic adhesive tapes

A= 5 ±1 mm

B= 4 ±1.3 mm

Preload on top of windscreen to prevent wind noise: 

Rear window (1) must be lower than roof outer skin (2). This is the only way to prevent wind noises.

Position special tool 51 0 010 in center of vehicle depending on dimension (A) and check underprotrusion of rear window (1).

A= 3 ±0.8 mm

X = Measurement stages 1... 4 mm
