Replacing Rear Left Outer Wheel Arch Section With Reinforcement (Rear Side Panel Removed) (M4 Convertible)
Follow procedure for REPAIR STAGE 3 .
Read contents of BODY, GENERAL .
Spot-weld bonding is used on this vehicle. Observe specific PROCEDURE .
Use only approved Spot-Welding Apparatus for repairs; See WORKSHOP EQUIPMENT (BMW AND MINI VEHICLES) .
For stripping and rebuilding operations, refer to surrounding texts on KSD (flat rate unit number 41 14 502).
Place vehicle on straightening bench.
Following new body parts are required (see applicable BMW Parts Catalog):
- (1) Outer wheel arch section
- (2) Side frame, outer
- (3) End plate, rear side panel
Removal
Open welded connections in areas (1).
OPEN spot-welded adhesive joints in area (2). Remove B-pillar reinforcement.
Open welded connections in areas (1).
Release bonded connection (2) (sealant) on radiator tank.
Installation note:
After removing the wheel arch: Remove adhesive residue on radiator tank.
Open welded connections in areas (1). Remove end plate (2).
Open welded connections in area (1).
Open spot-welded adhesive joints in areas (2). Remove outer section of wheel arch.
New part preparation
Remove unnecessary components from new part.
Remove adhesive residue from flange surfaces.
Mark severance cut (1) as pictured and cut.
Dimension a = approx. 20 mm.
Prepare MAG weld (metal active gas) in separating cut area. Length of weld seams approx. 15 mm. Distance 20 mm.
Prepare new parts for joining by welding in the remaining joining areas.
Adjust new components in conjunction with side panel to fit with straightening attachment or universal mount.
Installation
Install outer wheel arch section and weld in areas (1) and (2).
Weld new part in the areas (1).
Installation note:
After completing welding work: Apply sealant to radiator tank (2).
Install end plate (2) and weld in areas (1).
Install B-pillar reinforcement and weld in areas (1) and (2).
After completing welding work: Apply sealant between radiator tank and B-pillar reinforcement.
