Replacing Luggage Compartment Floor And Side Member On The Left (Rear Side Panel And Tail Panel Removed) (M4 Convertible)

Observe procedure of REPAIR STAGE 3 .

STRIP DOWN VEHICLE .

Place vehicle on straightening bench.

Use portal fixture from set of attachments.

The following new parts are required (see applicable BMW Parts Catalog):

Following CONSUMABLES  are required:

Adhesive K5a 2
Blind rivet N3 21
Blind rivet N6 8
EMC screw 7
Cleaning agent R1 1
Sealant D1  

Removal: 

Open welded connections in area (1).

Open welded connections in area (1) and remove luggage compartment floor.

Mark severance cut (1) next to reinforcement (2) and disconnect.

Open welded connections in areas (3).

Open welded connections in area (1).

Remove the luggage compartment floor.

Mark severance cut (1) through Ø 20 mm hole and cut.

IMPORTANT: Only disconnect the lower panel.

Mark severance cut (2) 25 mm before the center point hole (3) and disconnect.

Release welded connections in areas (4) and remove side member section.

Preparation of new part: 

Prepare the following new parts for joining by welding:

  1. Extension, bottom side member
  2. Extension, top side member
  3. Luggage compartment well, left
  4. Luggage compartment well
  5. Rear module lower section fixture
  6. Rear module upper section fixture

Mark severance cuts on side member in accordance with severance cuts on vehicle and cut.

Prepare for severance cuts on the side member REINFORCEMENT PLATES .

Mark severance cut at luggage compartment floor in accordance with severance cut on vehicle + 15 mm extra material and cut (1).

Set 4 4.2 mm ø bore holes in area (2).

Adjust new parts to fit with alignment bracket or universal mount and secure.

Additionally adjust new parts to fit with tail panel, tailgate and rear lights.

Position both fixtures (1) for rear module with portal fixtures from set of attachments.

In areas (1) to (3), set ø 4.2 mm bore holes for blind rivets N3.

NOTE: Side wall and tail panel have been hidden for clarity.

If necessary, mark bore holes in area (3) on body and create after removal of new part.

In area (1), set a ø 4.2 mm bore hole.

NOTE: Bore hole in area (1) must be set in combination with side panel.

New part is joined in area (1) together with side panel.

Side wall and tail panel have been hidden for clarity.

In areas (1) to (3), set 4.2 mm diameter bore holes for blind rivets.

Remove new parts and deburr bore holes.

IMPORTANT: Do not grind new parts and body in area of bonding surfaces.

Installation of side member and luggage compartment well: 

Install new parts and reinforcement plates with alignment bracket or universal fixture and portal fixtures and weld as in series production:

  1. Extension, bottom side member
  2. Extension, top side member
  3. Luggage compartment well, left
  4. Luggage compartment well
  5. Rear module lower section fixture
  6. Rear module upper section fixture

Installation of rear luggage compartment floor and left luggage compartment floor: 

Clean all  bonding surfaces with cleaning agent R1.

Apply adhesive on bonding surfaces and install new parts.

NOTE: When installing the new part, make sure that all bonding surfaces have sufficient adhesive.

In areas (1) to (3), rivet new part with blind rivets N3.

NOTE: Side wall and tail panel have been hidden for clarity.

In areas (1) to (3), rivet new part with blind rivets.

After hardening of the adhesive install 4 EMC SCREWS  in the areas shown (1).

In area (1) install one EMC screw.
