Replace the roof module (M4 Convertible)

Special tools required: 

• 54 0 101
• 54 0 161
• 54 0 240

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

• Remove the ROOF MODULE .

Set removed roof module down on inside of lid of transportation crate and bolt down.

Switch special tool 54 0 101 to a new roof module.

Check the distances between the left and right consoles and left and right main bearing:

1. Measure the distance between guide pins.
2. Measure the distance between the rear threaded bolts.

Check the measured lengths between the main bearings.

If applicable, adjust the distance that was measured between the guide pins with a twist sleeve (1).

If applicable, adjust the distance that was measured between the threaded bolts with a twist sleeve (2).

Lift the ROOF MODULE  into the vehicle and screw it to the main bearings.

Use a hexagon socket (AF 4) to open the shutoff valve on the hydraulic unit by four turns.

The system is de-pressurized.

Releasing base plate on left and right: 

Release screws (1) from base plate.

Make a note of their number and positions.

Unlock the coupling locks on both sides of the vehicle: 

Turn the hydraulic cylinder (1) toward the passenger compartment.

Mount the special tool 54 0 161 onto the piston rod.

Tip the special tool 54 0 161 upward.

This causes the coupling lock (1) to jump over the dead center.

Then slide on the coupling lock (1).

Only grasp the front roof shell when raising the roof shells.

Slightly lift the roof shell.

Remove the front closing part (1) on left and right.

Attention! 

Note the weight of the roof shell!

Lift out the roof shells evenly.

The following operations relate to the installation of the base plates and must be carried out if the convertible top is fully functional only.

Inserting base plate on left and right: 

Insert the base plate (1) including disassembled washers.

Loosely secure the base plate (1) with screws (2).

Connect connector (3).

Clip in the cables in the associated cable clip.

Installation note: 

Replace screws (2).

Tighten screws (2) with open soft top (refer to last step)

Tightening base plate on left and right: 

Tighten down screws (1).

Remove special tool 54 0 240 from the hydraulic cylinders on the left and right.

Manually close the convertible top compartment lid.

Run a function check.

Read out fault memory and, if necessary, delete it.

Install the ROOF MODULE  in the vehicle.

Detach removed roof module from inside of lid. Place the removed roof module in transport crate and screw down.

Remove special tool 54 0 101.

Seal shipping crate.
