Hardtop emergency opening (M4 Convertible)

Special tools required: 

• 54 0 163
• 13 5 250
• 54 0 161
• 54 0 240

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

• Remove both SIDE TRIM PANEL UPPER SECTIONS .
• Open all windows

Manual soft top movement only with ignition off!

Danger of damage to hydraulic valves.

The applied force must always be even on the left and right otherwise the linkage will bend.

Always execute all movements of the roof module with the assistance of a second person.

Danger of injury by trapping!

Unclip the protective cap.

Fit the special tool 54 0 163 in conjunction with 13 5 250.

Drive out pin.

Turn the bolts counterclockwise to open the locks.

Lower the bolts again after completing the opening process.

Turn back the bolts a few degrees as required.

Open tailgate.

Take out luggage compartment floor trim panel (1).

Fold the cover for luggage compartment upwards.

Feed out control unit (1).

Open the shutoff valve on the hydraulic unit by three turns using a hexagon socket (SW4).

System is now de-pressurized and can be moved manually.

Fold the luggage compartment cover downwards.

Close tailgate.

Unlocking the coupling lock: 

Turn the hydraulic cylinder (1) toward the passenger compartment.

Mount the special tool 54 0 161 onto the piston rod.

Tip the special tool 54 0 161 upward.

This causes the coupling lock (1) to jump over the dead center.

Then slide on the coupling lock (1).

To fold up the roof shells, position one person on the left and one on the right side.

It is imperative that you hold the front and rear roof shells at the same time.

Move the roof shells carefully and evenly.

Join the roof shells evenly and without tilting.

Manually open the rear module.

Clip the special tool 54 0 240 onto hydraulic cylinder (1) on left and right.

It is imperative that you only grasp the front roof shell when lowering the roof shells.

Carefully set down the roof shells.

Use appropriate force to close the rear module.

The vehicle should no longer be moved to avoid vibrations.

Roof shells which are not  locked may cause irreparable damage.
