Emergency operation with an open retractable hardtop (M4 Convertible)

Attention!

Always perform the emergency closing procedure with the aid of an assistant.

Manual soft top movement only with ignition off!

Danger of damage to hydraulic valves.

The applied force must always be even on the left and right otherwise the linkage will bend.

Always execute all movements of the roof module with the assistance of a second person.

Danger of injury by trapping!

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Remove both SIDE TRIM PANEL UPPER SECTIONS
Open all windows

Opening the coupling lock manually on the left and right:

Turn the hydraulic cylinder (1) toward the passenger compartment.

Mount the special tool 54 0 161 on the piston rod.

Tip the special tool 54 0 161 upward.

This causes the coupling lock (1) to jump over the dead center.

Then slide on the coupling lock (1).

Manually open the soft top compartment lid.

Clip the special tool 54 0 240 onto hydraulic cylinder (1) on left and right.

Attention!

The special tool opening must point towards the rear of the vehicle.

Releasing base plate on left and right:

Release screws (1) from base plate.

NOTE: Pay attention to washers below the base plate.

Make a note of their number and positions.

Open tailgate at emergency release.

Take out luggage compartment floor trim panel (1).

De-pressurizing the hydraulic system:

Feed out control unit (1).

Use a hexagon socket (AF 4) to open the shutoff valve on the hydraulic unit by four turns.

NOTE: Shutoff valve is located under a plastic funnel.

Removing the trim panel of the support tube on the right:

Release clips (1).

Feed out trim panel (2) in direction of arrow.

Loosening the hydraulic cylinder on the right:

Release screws (1) on left and right.

Slightly raise retaining clip (1) and detach hydraulic cylinder (3) from ball head (2).

Remove special tool 54 0 240 from the hydraulic cylinder and support the rear module using a suitable device.

Unclip cable tie (4).

Feed out hydraulic cylinder (3) with wiring harness and hydraulic lines.

Releasing holder on left and right:

Release screw (1).

Press the bracket (2) towards the outside and rear using a screwdriver.

Detach the bracket (2) from the anti-twist lock (3) and the shaft (4).

NOTE: The operation is easier to perform on the left than on the right.

NOTE: Two additional persons are required to help carry out the following operations.

Only grasp the front roof shell when raising the roof shells.

Slightly lift the roof shells and remove the base plate (1) from the convertible top at the front left and right.

NOTE: Pay attention to washers below the base plate (1).

Detaching holder on left and right:

Slightly raise roof shells and feed out holder (1) from lock (2).

NOTE: The operation is easier to perform on the left than on the right.

Remove support for rear module and hold rear module in opened position.

Attention!

Note the weight of the roof shell!

Lift out the roof shells evenly.

Attention!

Convertible top compartment lid can tilt forwards when hydraulic cylinders are removed and must be supported with suitable apparatus.

The emergency closing step is now completed.

Complete emergency closing of the soft top is not provided for.

Repair soft top.

The following operations pertain to the installation of parts removed during emergency closing and must only be carried out on a fully functioning soft top.

Inserting base plate on left and right:

Insert the base plate (1) including disassembled washers.

Loosely secure the base plate (1) with screws (2).

Connect connector (3).

Clip in the cables in the associated cable clip.

Installation note:

Replace screws (2).

Tighten screws (2) with open soft top (refer to last step)

Installing the hydraulic cylinder on the right:

Clip in cable clip (4).

Slide retaining clip (1) to the correct position on the hydraulic cylinder (3).

Feed out hydraulic cylinder (3) with the wiring harness and the hydraulic lines.

Clip on the hydraulic cylinder (3) onto the ball head (2).

Tighten the screw (1) on the right.

Tightening torque 54 37 31AZ .

NOTE: If necessary, remove the support of the tailgate and bring the roof module in position until it is possible to insert the screw (1).

Clip on the special tool 54 0 240 onto the hydraulic cylinder (1) on the right.

Attention!

Removing trim panel on left and right:

Fold the cover for luggage compartment upwards.

Release clips (1).

Remove trim panel (2) in direction of arrow.

Inserting locking plate on left and right:

Insert the locking plate (1) in the holder (2) and shaft (3).

Slide the anti-twist lock (2) as far as possible to the inside.

Carefully position the screw (1) and tighten it, continuing until it is just possible to move the locking plate.

Bring the convertible top into the position described below to be able to electrically move it.

Check whether the hydraulic system is de-pressurized, de-pressurize if necessary.

Remove special tool 54 0 240 on the left and right from the hydraulic cylinder (1) and in this process hold down the rear module.

Attention!

Use suitable auxiliary materials to ensure the roof shell is not rested on the base plates.

Otherwise, the extended locking pins of the front roof shell rest against the center roof shell. Risk of damage!

Unclip the protective cap.

Fit the special tool 54 0 163 in conjunction with 13 5 250.

Drive out pin.

Turn the bolts counterclockwise to open the locks.

Press the roof shells and convertible top compartment lid downwards on the left and right in the highlighted area.

Turn the bolt clockwise to consequently close the latch mechanisms.

Attention!

Risk of damage!

Once again lower the bolts after closing.

Turn back the bolts a few degrees as required.

Insert the protective cap.

Close the shutoff valve on the hydraulic unit using a hexagon socket (AF 4).

NOTE: Shutoff valve is located under a plastic funnel.

Completely open the convertible top electrically.

The locking plate is automatically centered when the convertible top is supported.

Tighten screw (1).

Tightening torque 54 37 30AZ .

Turn the hydraulic cylinder (1) toward the passenger compartment.

Mount the special tool 54 0 161 on the piston rod.

Tightening base plate on left and right:

Tighten down screws (1).

Remove special tool 54 0 240 from the hydraulic cylinders on the left and right.

Manually close the convertible top compartment lid.

Run a function check.

Read out fault memory and, if necessary, delete it.

Required follow-up work:

MOUNT TRIM PANEL FOR REAR LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT .
Mount SUPPORT TUBE TRIM .
Mount BOTH SIDE TRIM PANEL UPPER SECTIONS .
Install LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT FLOOR TRIM PANEL .
