18 12 031 Replacing the rear silencer

WARNING: Risk of burning!
Only perform this repair after the exhaust system has cooled down.
Danger of injury!
Call on the assistance of a second person to remove the rear silencer.

CAUTION: Wear safety goggles and protective gloves.
Conduct all work in appropriate personal protective equipment only.
Swarf resulting from sawing or grinding components could get into your eyes.

Necessary preliminary work:

Support rear silencer with a suitable jack and secure against falling down.

Removal:

NOTE: If the separation point is not marked by a punch mark in the pipe, determine the separation point by means of the pipe length on the new rear silencer (1).
Carry over separation point to faulty rear silencer (1) and mark.
Secure rear silencer (1) against falling out.
Cut through exhaust pipes at marked point with a suitable tool.

Removal:

Unlock and disconnect plugs (1).

Slacken nut (2).

Feed out and remove rear silencer (3).

Preparation for installation:

Check rubber mount for damage, replace if necessary.

Installation:

Thread in rear silencer (3) and install.

Tighten nut (2).

Tightening torque, refer to: 18 20 3AZ .

Connect connector (1) and lock.

Connector (1) must engage audibly.

Connect the new rear silencer (3) with the clamp (2) to the front silencer (1).

Center the clamp (2) and tighten down.

Tightening torque, refer to: 18 20 4AZ .

NOTE: It Is mandatory to replace the exhaust covers after removal. The correct stop on the exhaust system can no longer be guaranteed after removal.
Schematic diagram is for example purposes. Some parts may differ in certain details.

Replace the exhaust covers (1).

Parts: Exhaust cover

Correctly position and align the exhaust covers (1) on the exhaust system.

With increased effort, slide the exhaust covers (1) onto the exhaust system up to the limit position.

Required follow-up work:

Check exhaust system for leak tightness.
