11 31 005 Checking camshaft timing (PHEV)

Special tools required: 

WARNING: High-voltage system - danger to life 

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Remove seal plug (1).

Rotate crankshaft at central bolt into TDC setting.

Slide in special tool 2 219 548 into dowel hole and secure crankshaft.

Remove seal plug (1) in direction of arrow using a screwdriver.

NOTE: Special tool 2 219 548 can only be fixed to the flywheel (1) in the position specified (see arrow).

Installation note: 

Coat special tool 2 219 548 with oil for simplifying disassembly and installation.

To secure crankshaft, insert special tool 2 219 548 in dowel hole.

IMPORTANT: If the flywheel is secured in the correct dowel hole with special tool 2 219 548 , the engine can no longer be moved at the central bolt.

NOTE: Special tool: 2 212 831 .

Use special tool (1) to attach special tool (4) to the cylinder head.

Attach special tool (1) to cylinder head using a screw (2).

Position special tool (3) without recess at mounting flats of the exhaust camshaft.

The cams of the exhaust camshaft point diagonally upwards when in TDC firing position at cylinder 1.

Position the special tool (2) with recess at the mounting flats of the intake camshaft.

With 1st cylinder in TDC firing position, cams of intake camshaft (1) point upward at an angle.

Fit gauge for the camshaft sensor wheel (1) to the cylinder head.

Check setting of the camshaft sensor wheels.

Special tool 2 212 830 .

Position the camshaft sensor wheel of the exhaust camshaft in the direction of the arrow using the pin (1).

Position the camshaft sensor wheel of the intake camshaft in the direction of the arrow using the pin (2).

Installation note: 

If the camshaft sensor wheels have been readjusted, the central bolts must be loosened.

NOTE: If special tool 2 219 548 cannot be removed due to stiff movement, then it can be removed by turning and pulling with the aid of half-round long-nose pliers (angled) (1).

If necessary, adjust valve timing.

Assemble engine.
