17 00 040 Venting high temperature - cooling system and checking for water leaks (N20 PHEV)

WARNING: High-voltage system - risk of serious injury or death.  Observe SAFETY INFORMATION for working with electric vehicles.
WARNING: Risk of scalding!
Open sealing cap only after engine has cooled down.
IMPORTANT: Electric coolant pump:  Follow notes for CARRYING OUT REPAIR WORK ON THE COOLING SYSTEM .
IMPORTANT: Lifetime coolant filling:  Never reuse used coolant. When replacing and removing components which rely on the corrosion protection effect of the coolant, it is essential to change the coolant. The cooling system must therefore be drained and refilled.
IMPORTANT: In the case of other removal work involving the draining of part quantities of coolant, replace these quantities which have been drained with new coolant.

When refilling:

Perform filling operation slowly.

Adjust coolant level to maximum.

IMPORTANT: The following bleeding procedure  is, for example, necessary when a part is replaced in the cooling system or when the cooling system is refilled.

Adding coolant:

Fill high temperature - cooling system  with VACUUM FILLING UNIT .

IMPORTANT: Before the high temperature - coolant circuit bleeding procedure, the low temperature coolant circuit must be adjusted  .

Open coolant expansion tank of low temperature - coolant circuit and overfill with 60 ml (5 mm) above the maximum mark.

Venting cooling system:

  1. Fill high temperature-cooling system  using the vacuum filling device, after completing the filling procedure, remove the vacuum filling device.
  2. Top up expansion tank for high temperature cooling system 40 ml  (4 mm) above the maximum mark.
  3. Close sealing cap of expansion tank for high temperature-coolant circuit  .
  4. Connect battery charger.
  5. It is to be ensured that before starting the automatic bleeding procedure both coolant circuits  (low temperature-coolant circuit and high temperature-coolant circuit) are filled.

The bleeding procedure is automatically started simultaneously for both circuits  .

If the bleeding procedure is started while one of the cooling circuit is empty,  there is a danger  that the coolant pump could become damaged  from running it dry.

  6. Switch on ignition and low-beam headlight. Switch on the low-beam headlights to perform the bleeding procedure. If the low-beam headlights are not switched on, the ignition (terminal 15) will switch off automatically after a certain period of time and interrupt  the bleeding procedure.
  7. Set heating to maximum  temperature and turn blower to lowest  speed.
  8. Press accelerator pedal for 10 seconds to floor. Engine must not  be started. Driving experience switch (FES) must be on comfort  .
  9. The bleeding procedure is started when the accelerator pedal is pressed and takes approx. 12 minutes. (the electric coolant pumps) were activated and will switch off automatically after about 12 min.
  10. CHECK COOLING SYSTEM FOR WATERTIGHTNESS .
  11. Check filling level in the expansion tank for high temperature-coolant circuit and where necessary top up to the maximum mark  .
  12. Check filling level in the expansion tank for low temperature-coolant circuit and where necessary top up to the maximum mark  .

Installation note:

If venting has to be carried out again (e.g. if cooling system is leaking), allow DME to fall completely (leave ignition key removed for approx. 3 mins.), then repeat from step  2.
