31 21 180 Replacing Bearing (Wheel Bearing) For Front Wheel

Special tools required: 

IMPORTANT: Bearing can not be dismantled.
Do not wash out bearing.

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

IMPORTANT: Expand anti-twist lock sufficiently to avoid damaging thread when releasing collar nut.

Release collar nut (1), press brake pedal to floor for this purpose.

Tightening torque 31 21 2AZ .

Installation note: 

Replace collar nut, oil collar nut/wheel bearing contact surface only and tighten down.

No oil permitted on thread of shaft journal or collar nut.

Secure collar nut by positive peening on flat areas of output shaft.

Remove BRAKE DISC

Release screw (1) and pull pulse sensor out of bore.

Tightening torque 34 51 3AZ .

Installation note: 

Clean bore for pulse sensor and lubricate with Staburags NBU 12/K lubricating grease.

Release screws (2) and remove holder from swivel bearing.

NOTE: Output shaft has been removed only for the purpose of creating the picture.

Release bolts (1) and remove wheel bearing.

Tightening torque 31 21 1AZ .

Installation note: 

Replace screws.

Use special tool  .

The following work steps describe pressing out the output shaft/wheel bearing:

The following tools are required to press out the output shaft from the drive flange, see graphic for arrangement:

Vehicle components: 

I Drive flange hub
II Wheel bearing/swivel bearing

Necessary components: 

1 Hydraulic unit
E3 Washer M24
F3 Spindle M24 (length 270 mm)
C1 Holding sleeve
K2 Screws M14 x 1.5
B1 Adapter
IMPORTANT: Do not damage inner race (1) of wheel bearing.

Installation note: 

Keep contact surface of swivel bearing and wheel bearing clean and free from oil and grease.

The following work steps describe drawing in the output shaft/wheel bearing:

The following tools are required to fit the output shaft in the drive flange, see graphic for arrangement:

Vehicle components: 

I Drive flange hub
II Wheel bearing/swivel bearing
III Output shaft

Required components for all models and types: 

1 Hydraulic unit
E1 Holding sleeveM24
D1 Washer
F2 Spindle M24/M20 (length 335 mm)

Components specific to model and type (thread diameter, output shaft): 

G1 Adapter M22 x 1.5 to M20
G2 Adapter M24 x 1.5 to M20
G3 Adapter M27 x 1.5 to M20

IMPORTANT: Risk of damage!
Due to the technical requirements, the special tool used, sleeve G,* is relatively thin-walled.
So that the load limit of the clamping sleeve is not exceeded when pulling in the output shaft, you must  use the adapter 81 64 2 318 661  together with a torque wrench.

Fit adapter with torque wrench to hydraulic unit (see Fig 7).

Set torque wrench to 20 Nm  .

Draw in output shaft with hydraulic tool until the torque wrench is activated.
