51 16 165 Completely removing and installing the center console \PREMIUM

Overview of Activities 

Preprocesses 

  1. Remove battery cover
  2. Disconnect battery earth lead
  3. Removing side carpet on front left and right
  4. Removing side carpet on rear left and right
  5. Removing trim from rear center console (version without FD)
  6. Removing trims on the base of the FD on the left and right (version with FD)
  7. Remove rear center console trim
  8. Removing rear fresh air grille
  9. Removing front center console trim
  10. Removing the selector lever support
  11. Remove trim on the audio socket

    Keyprocesses 

  12. Remove center console.
  13. Installing the center console

    Postprocesses 

  14. Install trim on the audio socket
  15. Installing the selector lever support
  16. Fit front center console trim
  17. Installing the rear fresh air grille
  18. Install rear center console trim
  19. Installing trims on the base of the FD on the left and right (version with FD)
  20. Installing trim in rear center console (version without FD)
  21. Installing the side carpet on the rear left and right
  22. Installing side carpets on the front left and right
  23. Connect battery earth lead
  24. Installing the battery cover

Preprocesses 

  1. Remove battery cover 
    • Open the luggage compartment floor trim panel.
    • Release screws (1)  .
    • Remove battery cover upwards.

  2. Disconnect battery earth lead 

    Prerequisite 

    Ignition switched off.

    • Slacken nut (1)  .
      NOTE: Risk of damage! Do not under any circumstances pull or lever off intelligent battery sensor from battery by force.
    • Remove intelligent battery sensor (2) from battery and secure to side.

  3. Removing side carpet on front left and right 
    NOTE: Description is for left component only. Procedure on the right side is identical.
    NOTE: For better schematic diagram/mapping without seat.
    • Release screw (1).
    • Release side carpet (2) from clips (3).
    • Pull out side carpet (2) from the clamps (4) towards the front.

  4. Removing side carpet on rear left and right 
    NOTE: Description is for left component only. Procedure on the right side is identical.
    NOTE: For better schematic diagram/mapping without seat.
    • Push side carpet (1) forwards to loosen it from the clamps (2).
    • Feed side carpet (1) out of center console.

  5. Removing trim from rear center console (version without FD) 
    • Lever trim (1) out of center console in the direction of arrow of the clamps (2) with special tool.

  6. Removing trims on the base of the FD on the left and right (version with FD) 
    NOTE: Description is for left component only. Procedure on the right side is identical.
    • Unclip trim (1) with special tool and remove.

    • Unclip trim (1) with special tool and remove.

    • Open armrest (1).
    • Unclip trim (2) with special tool and remove.

  7. Remove rear center console trim 
    NOTE: For better schematic diagram/mapping without seat.
    • Release left and right screws (1).
    • Lift retaining tabs (2) on left and right over latch mechanisms; remove rear center console trim (3) from center console.

    • Disconnect plug connections (1) and remove rear center console trim (2).

  8. Removing rear fresh air grille 
    • Unclamp latch mechanisms (1) on both sides.
    • Carefully lever out fresh air grille (2) in upward direction and disconnect associated plug connection.

  9. Removing front center console trim 
    NOTE: Risk of damage! For version (1) up to 10/2009 (without M models) the controller button must be removed as preliminary work.
    • (1) Prior to 10/2009: Controller has buttons at only bottom.
    • (2) After 10/2009: Controller has buttons at bottom and top.

    • Pry off button for controller (1) from controller with special tool and in direction of arrow and remove.

      NOTE: Risk of damage! The trim may break off at the side during levering out. Place special tool directly at clamps (2)!
    • Tape off trim (1) and center console in working area.
    • Lift trim (1) out of the center console with special tool starting from the front area.
    • Then carefully lift out trim (1) in side area (3).
    • Lever out the remainder of the clamp (2) and remove the trim (1).

  10. Removing the selector lever support 
    • Release screws (1).
    • Lift the selector lever support (2) and disconnect the associated plug connection.
    • Remove the selector lever support (2).

  11. Remove trim on the audio socket 
    • Use special tool to unlock retaining lugs (2) and feed out trim (1) from storage compartment.
    • Disconnect associated plug connections and remove trim (1).

    Keyprocesses 

  12. Remove center console. 
    NOTE: For better schematic diagram/mapping without seat.
    • Connect the battery.
    • Move front seat till the screws (1 and 2) are accessible.
    • Release screws (1 and 2).
    • Repeat operation on the right-hand side.
    • Disconnect battery.

    • Loosen screw (1) and pull the center console (2) backwards by approximately 50 mm.
    • Version with FD  : Disconnect plug connections (3).

    • Feed air duct (1) out of center console (3).
    • Loosen cable clip for cable (2) from center console (3).

    • Disconnect plug connection (1).

    • Version with eject box  : Feed out plug connections (1) and disconnect.

    • Remove center console (1) to the rear/top.
    • Feed out wiring harnesses (2) and (3).
    • Remove center console (1).

  13. Installing the center console 
    NOTE: For better schematic diagram/mapping without seat.
    • Install center console (1) from the rear/top.
    • Feed in wiring harnesses (2) and (3).

    • Version with eject box  : Connect connector (1) and feed in wiring harness into the retaining clips.

    • Connect the connector (1).

    • Secure cable clip for cable (2) on center console (3).
    • Feed air duct (1) into the center console (3).

    • Push the center console (2) completely forwards and completely tighten the screws (1).
      TIGHTENING TORQUES SPECIFICATION

      Center console to holder 
      M6 5.6 Nm
    • Version with FD  : Connect connector (3).

    • Connect the battery.
    • Move front seat till the screws (1 and 2) are accessible.
    • Tighten down screws (1 and 2).
      TIGHTENING TORQUES SPECIFICATION

      Center console to holder 
      M6 5.6 Nm
    • Repeat operation on the right-hand side.
    • Disconnect battery.

    Postprocesses 

  14. Install trim on the audio socket 
    • Connect associated connectors and install trim (1).
    • Clip in trim (1) at the retaining lugs (2).

  15. Installing the selector lever support 
    • Connect all connectors with the selector lever (2).
    • Install the selector lever support (2).
    • Tighten down screws (1).

  16. Fit front center console trim 
    • Check retaining clips (1) and (2) for damage and replace if necessary.

    • Install trim (1) and evenly lock on all clamps (2).

    • For version (1) up to 10/2009 (without M models) the controller button must be installed.
    • (1) Prior to 10/2009: Controller has buttons at only bottom.
    • (2) After 10/2009: Controller has buttons at bottom and top.

    • Position button (1) so that the guides (2) are located in the recesses (3).
    • Completely clip button (1) on to controller.

  17. Installing the rear fresh air grille 
    • Connect connector to fresh air grille.
    • Install fresh air grille (2) from above.
    • Clip in latch mechanisms (1) on both sides.

  18. Install rear center console trim 
    • Connect connector (1) and install the rear center console trim (2).

      NOTE: For better schematic diagram/mapping without seat.
    • Lift retaining tabs (2) on left and right over latch mechanisms and install rear center console trim (3) in center console.
    • Tighten screws (1) on left and right.
    TIGHTENING TORQUES SPECIFICATION

    Rear center console trim on center console 
    Sheet metal screw 2.8 Nm

  19. Installing trims on the base of the FD on the left and right (version with FD)

    • Open armrest (1).
    • Feed in trim (2) and clip in.

  20. Installing trim in rear center console (version without FD) 
    • Replace faulty clamps (1).
    • Clip trim (2) into the center console from top.

  21. Installing the side carpet on the rear left and right 
    NOTE: Description is for left component only. Procedure on the right side is identical.
    NOTE: For better schematic diagram/mapping without seat.
    • Replace faulty clamps (2).
    • Push side carpet (1) into the center console from the front to attach it to the clamps (2).

  22. Installing side carpets on the front left and right 
    NOTE: Description is for left component only. Procedure on the right side is identical.
    NOTE: For better schematic diagram/mapping without seat.
    • Replace defective clips (3) and clamps (4).
    • Feed side carpet (2) into the center console from the front.
    • Secure side carpet (2) to clips (3).
    • Tighten screw (1).

    Sheet metal screw 2.8 Nm

  23. Connect battery earth lead 
    • Position intelligent battery sensor (2)  on the battery.
    • Tighten nut (1)  .

    Battery earth lead to battery 
    M6 5 Nm

  24. Installing the battery cover 
    • Install battery cover from above.
    • Tighten down screws (1).
      TIGHTENING TORQUES SPECIFICATION

      Battery cover on luggage compartment 
      Sheet metal screw 3 Nm
    • Close the luggage compartment floor trim panel.
