12 23 505 Replacing all glow plugs (M57/M57TU/M47TU/M47T2/M57T2)

Special tools required: 

NOTE: Read out fault memory of DDE control unit (DDE = Digital Diesel Electronics).

Switch off ignition.

If malfunctions occur at the glow elements, it is absolutely essential to check the fuses behind the glovebox.

For further troubleshooting information refer to the BMW diagnosis system.

NOTE: Bring the engine to operating temperature for easier removal of the glow elements. In addition, spray the glow elements with the REMOVAL AGENT 5.1 and let sit for about 2 minutes. If glow elements are removed from a cold engine, the thread in the cylinder head may be damaged.
IMPORTANT: Risk of burning! Wearing gloves is mandatory!

Necessary preliminary work: 

Release connector (1) with special tool 12 2 300 and remove.

Release glow elements (1) with special tool 11 6 050 .

Tightening torque: 12 23 2AZ .

NOTE: If applicable, drill out the special tool 11 6 050 with a twist drill Ø 9.5 mm approximately 20 mm deep.

Installation note: 

Different glow elements in M47 and M47TU engines!

M47 glow elements (1) without designation groove.

M47TU rapid start glow elements (2) with designation groove and silver surface.

Delete fault memory.
