32 34 030 Removing and installing/replacing airbag unit (sports steering wheel)
- Comply with SAFETY REGULATIONS when handling components with gas generators.
- Do not exert any force on the airbag unit.
- Use only specified release tool for the airbag unit.
Attention!
STEERING WHEEL must be replaced if airbag unit has been triggered!
Follow PROCEDURE AFTER AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT .
Necessary preliminary work:
- Disconnect NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE .
- Move steering column in "bottom" and "extended" position.
Removal:
Turn the steering wheel through 180° from the "straight-ahead driving position".
Insert the slotted screwdriver (1) (from the toolkit) into the elongated hole (2) on the rear side of the steering wheel.
Press the slotted screwdriver upwards. This means that the retaining spring is pressed down and the lower airbag unit can be felt to unlock.
- Push the unlocked airbag (lower) upwards.
- At the same time, pull off the top airbag unit in the direction of travel.
Disconnect plug connections (1) and (2).
Remove airbag unit.
The airbag unit may only be set down with the airbag facing up.
Installation:
Connect plug connections (1) and (2).
Installation note:
Before installing the airbag, move the wiring harness (1) to the center so that the latch mechanisms are exposed.
Position airbag unit (1).
Press evenly on the airbag unit until the airbag unit can be felt and heard to engage!
Pull on the airbag unit to check the latch mechanism.
Required follow-up work:
- Connect the BATTERY EARTH LEAD .
