Replacing gaiter for steering gear on left or right (X2 2018-2023)

CAUTION: If the surface of the rack is damaged (e.g. corrosion), the steering gear must be replaced!

Necessary preliminary work: 

Removal: 

Slacken nut (1).

Release tie rod (2) from swivel bearing.

Mark thread depth of tie rod end to simplify subsequent adjustment of front axle.

Release screw (1).

Unscrew tie rod end (2).

Before removal, clean the tie rod, gaiter and the area around the gaiter in order to prevent the ingress of dirt!

Release EAR CLIP  (1).

Release band clamp (1) and detach gaiter (2) from tie rod.

Installation: 

Grease the tie rod at the seat of the gaiter (1) with FB-1 lubricating grease, part number 2 208 093".

Before installing the gaiter, lightly grease the steering gear at the seat of the gaiter with FB-1 lubricating grease.

Position the gaiter (2) on the steering gear.

Part:  Release ear clip (1).

Mount EAR CLAMP  (1).

Position the gaiter (2) on the tie rod.

Mount the clip (1).

Screw the tie rod end (2) onto the tie rod up to the mark.

Tighten screw (1).

Tightening torque 32 21 2AZ .

Keep tie rod end to swivel bearing connection clean and free from oil and grease.

Insert tie rod (2) into swivel bearing.

Part:  Replace nut (1).

Tighten nut (1).

Tightening torque 32 21 1AZ .
