51 31 011 Replace windscreen

Special tools required: 

Attention! 

The following notes form the basis for these repair instructions and must be adhered to at all times:

Removal is performed with ROLL OUT 2000 .

The following new parts/consumables are required (sourcing reference BMW Parts Department).

Material Quantity
Windscreen 1
Cover, windscreen 1
Spacer buffer 5x5x20 mm 11
Small repair kit 1
Sika Aktivator 205 (windscreen cover) 1
Expanding foam tape 1

Necessary preliminary work: 

Depending on version: 

Tape off body in area of piercing point with fabric adhesive tape.

Push wire from ROLL OUT 2000  along line (1) through adhesive bead (2).

For details on how to proceed, refer to: WINDOW REMOVAL WITH "ROLL OUT 2000" .

Lift out windscreen with suction cup.

Space buffer:

To prevent windscreen breakage and wind noise, completely remove any remnants of removed spacer buffers and maintain the installation position exactly.

Installation position of spacer buffers (1) is specified on body side with markings (2).

Installation dimensions:

to the inner edge of the sheet metal flange (roof) To the center of the cowl panel
A ≈ 170 mm D ≈ 50 mm
B ≈ 370 mm E ≈ 300 mm
C ≈ 550 mm F ≈ 600 mm
Spacer buffer to be used 5x5x20 mm

1 Windscreen
2 Sound insulation (expanding foam tape)
3 Adhesive bead
4 Expanding foam tape for inspection glass for vehicle identification number
A 60 ±1 mm (window edge to 2)
B 30 ±1 mm (window edge to 2)
C 53 ±1 mm (window edge to 2)

Observe NOTES  on component-bonding with adhesive tape!

Apply EXPANDING TAPE  for VIN number inspection glass on windscreen.

Stick the new sound insulation (2) on the marked area of the windscreen.

Install the COVER/RUBBER FRAME  (1) for the windscreen.

Pre-treat adhesive area with Sika-Aktivator205.

Perform the following steps carefully on the windscreen using siphon (51 3 010):

Preload on top of windscreen (prevention of wind noise): 

In order to avoid wind noises, windscreen (1) must be lower than roof outer skin (2).

Position special tool 51 0 010 in middle of vehicle depending on measurement (A) and check underprotrusion of windscreen (1).

A = 3.5±1 mm without HUD

A = 3.3±1 mm with HUD

A = 2.9±1 mm with HUD and IR

X = Measuring levels on the special tool (1...4 mm)

Version with HUD only: 

Check HUD  . See 62 30 517 ADJUSTING HEAD-UP DISPLAY or 62 30... GENERAL NOTES ON THE HEAD-UP DISPLAY  functions again and if necessary adjust.

Only with camera-based driver support systems: 

Carry out camera calibration via diagnosis system.
