Removing and installing/replacing left spindle drive (4' Series Gran Coupe Sedan)
- Rattling when opening and closing
- Drive not functioning
- Drive is blocked or sluggish
- No longer closes or opens
Or if incorrect operation is suspected:
- Rear lid was closed with excessive exertion of force
- Bent, broken piston rod
- Broken ball head
The compression spring must be secured against unintentional sudden release .
Electric spindle drive for rear lid is under mechanical spring bias!
The component must be secured against falling down.
Attention!
Risk of damage to spindle drive!
If spindle drive has been electrically disabled (e.g. connector unplugged) the tailgate must only be moved slowly by hand.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- DETERMINE AND NOTE DOWN OPENING HEIGHT OF AUTOMATIC LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT LID ACTUATION
Adjust tailgate to maximum opening angle. The spindle drive may only be removed or installed when the tailgate is open to the maximum.
- Remove the LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT WHEEL ARCH PANEL
Remove clip (1).
Unclip funnel (2) from clips (3).
Danger of injury!
Support rear lid in fully opened position with suitable apparatus.
Disconnect plug connection (2).
DISASSEMBLE ball socket (1) with clamp.
Remove spindle drive (3) together with funnel (4).
Replacement:
Detach the retaining lugs (1) from around the gaiter (2) and remount the gaiter (2).
Concluding tasks:
Initialize automatic operation of tailgate using the service function in the diagnosis system.

- Body
- Automatic tailgate operation
- Power tailgate initialization
Check the opening angle setting of the tailgate and restore the customer setting if necessary.
