Removing and installing/replacing actuating unit with control unit for parking brake (EMF) (X6 M)

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

IMPORTANT: Check function of actuator unit. If actuator unit is defective, set diagnosis system to workshop mode. Clear diagnostic fault entries from fault memory. 

Replacement: 

If workshop mode cannot be activated for the EMF actuator unit, the Bowden cables must be unlocked using emergency operation.

Open flap in luggage compartment at rear left.

Remove first-aid kit (1).

Cable for emergency operation (1) must be removed with actuator unit.

Press together both retaining lugs and press cable for emergency operation (1) downwards.

Unclip cable for emergency operation from guides on rear axle.

Release screw (1) and detach wire spring clip (2) on left and right.

Installation note: 

Tightening torque 34 41 1AZ .

Disengage parking brake Bowden cable (1) from holders on left and right.

Version 1: 

Turn brake disc into position as illustrated (arrow).

Position screwdriver (1) on brake shoe expander (2) as illustrated.

NOTE: For greater clarity, illustration does not show brake disc.

Pull up parking brake cable behind hub carrier towards brake shoe expander (2) as far as it will go and hold in position.

At the same time, use a standard screwdriver (3) to press nipple (1) in brake shoe expander (2) upwards as far as possible.

Screwdriver: shank length 40 mm, blade width 4 mm

Pull handbrake cable out of wheel carrier.

NOTE: Cable must not be pulled out before lifting the nipple (1).

Version 2: 

Turn brake disc into position as illustrated (arrow).

Position screwdriver (1) on brake shoe expander (2) as illustrated.

NOTE: For greater clarity, illustration does not show brake disc.

Pull up parking brake cable behind hub carrier towards brake shoe expander (2) as far as it will go and hold in position.

At the same time, use a standard screwdriver (3) to press nipple (1) in brake shoe expander (2) downwards as far as possible.

Screwdriver: shank length 40 mm, blade width 4 mm

Pull handbrake cable out of wheel carrier.

NOTE: The cable must not be pulled out before the nipple (1) has been pushed down as far as possible.

Installation note: 

Grease nipple of parking brake Bowden cable with assembly paste (part number 81 22 9 407 171).

Obtainable from BMW Group Parts.

Feed parking brake cable horizontally  into brake anchor plate/brake guard plate. Sleeve must be inserted up to stop.

Nipple of parking brake Bowden cable must audibly snap into place in brake shoe expander.

Disconnect plug connection (1).

Unfasten screws (2).

Installation note: 

Tightening torque 34 41 4AZ .

Undo bolts (3) and remove bracket (4).

Installation note: 

Tightening torque 34 41 3AZ .

Feed out actuator unit together with parking brake Bowden cable and cable for emergency operation.

After installation: 

Replacement:
