11 31 028 Removing and installing/replacing exhaust camshaft (B48AO0)

Special tools required: 

Necessary preliminary work: 

Removal: 

NOTE: The bearing caps are legibly labelled with (A1 and A2)  on the intake side.
The bearing cap (A)  is a thrust bearing.

Release all screws in the sequence 10 - 1  in 1/2 turns.

Set down all bearing caps in a tidy and orderly fashion on special tool 11 4 480.

Remove roller tappet (1).

Remove the high pressure pump bracket (2).

Take exhaust camshaft (1) out of cylinder head.

Installation: 

CAUTION: Removal on engine: 
Set engine to ignition TDC at cylinder No. 1.
Removed cylinder head: 
When using special tool 11 9 000, it will be necessary to remove the aluminium strip.

Moisten all bearing positions (1) with engine oil.

Installation note: 

Prior to installation of exhaust camshaft, ensure proper installation position of rocker arm (1).

Coat exhaust camshaft and bearing caps with engine oil.

Engage the exhaust camshaft into the cylinder head so that the data code (1) is pointing upwards.

NOTE: Check the fitting sleeves (1) for proper fit and for damage.

Coat the exhaust camshaft and the bearing shells with engine oil.

Position all bearing shells on cylinder head.

NOTE: The bearing caps are legibly labelled with (A1 and A2)  on the intake side.

Installation note: 

Check the tensile strength of the screws for the bearing caps.

The figure shows the screw with the tensile strength of 8.8  .

Coat both bearing positions at the high pressure pump bracket with engine oil.

Position the high pressure pump bracket on the cylinder head.

Press down the bearing caps and gradually tighten the screws in the sequence 1 - 10  so that they are hand-tight.

Join  screws in sequence 1-10  in half turns.

Note the tightening torque 11 31 1AZ .

Tighten  all screws in sequence from 1 - 10  .

Install the roller tappet (1) in the high pressure pump carrier (2).

Required follow-up work:
