11 36 125 Removing and installing/replacing intake VANOS central valve: Notes

WARNING: Working on 12 V electrical system.
Risk of short circuits! Risk of fire!

Make sure that there is no charger connected to the jump start terminal in the engine compartment.
Detach battery ground lead from battery.
For auxiliary batteries: Detach battery minus cables from all auxiliary batteries.

WARNING: Working on fuel system.
Risk of fire! Danger of explosion!

When working on the fuel system, make sure that the workbay is sufficiently ventilated, e.g. using extraction unit.
Tightly seal off open lines and connections; collect any leakage fuel directly at the point of exit.
No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.

CAUTION: On releasing high pressure line, fuel may emerge at high speed.
Injury hazard!

Wear suitable personal protective equipment.
Before performing any installation work, allow cooling system to cool down to less than 40 °C.
Note warnings on cylinder head cover.

NOTE: RISK OF DAMAGE
Damage to battery terminal, the safety battery terminal or the intelligent battery sensor (IBS).
Damaged battery terminals can lead to malfunctions or vehicle electrical system faults.

Detach battery terminal from battery pole by carefully shifting to and fro. Do not pry off using a tool.

NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
After replacing one or more VANOS central valves or VANOS adjusters:
When removing, make note of the identification/part number of the VANOS central valve or VANOS adjuster and consider writing it down.
It must be replaced with a VANOS adjuster or VANOS central valve with the same part number. A mixed installation is not allowed.
Read out the vehicle I-level and proceed accordingly.
Be absolutely certain to pay attention to PuMA measure 64122020.

Preliminary work:

Disconnect all battery ground leads
Bring engine compartment lid into service position
Remove the cover in the left engine compartment
Remove the right cover in the engine compartment
Remove both wiper arms
Remove cowl panel cover
Refer to REMOVING TRAILING LINK AT SPRING STRUT DOME
Remove the sound insulation on the bulkhead upper part center
Remove ACOUSTIC COVER AT REAR

Remove ignition coils. Refer to REPLACING IGNITION COILS .
Remove all spark plugs. Refer to REMOVING/INSTALLING/REPLACING ALL SPARK PLUGS (B58) .

Turn the engine on the vibration damper. Refer to the relevant instructions under the procedure for CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) or CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (MANUAL TRANSMISSION) .
Block the crankshaft in the TDC firing position of the 1st cylinder. Refer to the relevant instructions under the procedure for CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) or CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (MANUAL TRANSMISSION) .
Refer to the relevant instructions for blocking the camshafts under procedure for CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) or CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (MANUAL TRANSMISSION) .

Install the lower right engine bulkhead. Tightening torque: 19 Nm.
Refer to INSTALLING ACOUSTIC COVER AT REAR
Install tension strut on spring strut dome. Jointing torque: 56 Nm, angle of rotation: 90°
NOTE: Replace screws.
Install the sound insulation on the bulkhead upper part center
Attach cowl panel cover
Install both wiper arms
Check the angle of attack of the wiper arms on the left and right
Install the cover in the engine compartment on the left
Install the cover in the engine compartment on the right
Refer to INSTALLING STARTER MOTOR
Disconnect all battery ground leads
Connect the diagnostic system for possible integration level encoding and programming
Refer to INSTALLING ACOUSTIC COVER
Refer to INSTALLING REINFORCEMENT PLATE
Install underbody protection at rear
Install the front underbody protection
Take hood out of the service position
Check engine oil level and top up oil as necessary
