11 31 548 Checking timing chain for elongation and replacing both timing chains (N47D/D/C K/U/O/T 0/1)
Special tools required:
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- CHECK TOP TIMING CHAIN .
- Remove CYLINDER HEAD COVER .
The marking on exhaust sprocket wheel (A) must be aligned with the marking on intake sprocket wheel (E).
Installation note:
It is not permitted to turn the engine back, measured values are distorted.
Special tool 11 5 320 must be exactly in the alignment position.
Remove protective cap of timing case cover.
Turn engine with special tool 11 6 480 .
Use special tool 11 5 320 to block the crankshaft in the TDC firing position Cylinder 1
Place special tool 11 8 760 on exhaust camshaft.
Determine gap dimension.
Slide feeler gauge (1) between cylinder head and special tool 11 8 760 without jamming (see arrow).
Follow diagnosis instruction.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove ENGINE .
- Mount engine on assembly stand. See MOUNTING ENGINE ON ASSEMBLY STAND (N47 D20 O1) .
- Remove CYLINDER HEAD .
- Remove OIL SUMP .
- Remove TIMING CASE COVER .
- Remove OIL/VACUUM PUMP .
Remove timing chain for the cylinder head.
Remove tensioning rail (1) from cylinder head.

Removal for vehicles before 5/2013
The crankshaft must be blocked in order to release central bolt (1) of the high pressure pump.
Position special tool 11 4 320 with screw (2) at the crankcase.
Alternatively, special tool 2 25 671 may also be used.
Removal for vehicles after 5/2013
Position special tool 2 285 671 on the crankcase.
Release central bolt (1) of high pressure pump.
Screw special tool 11 8 740 into sprocket of high pressure pump.
Undo the central bolt (1) of the high pressure pump until the central bolt can rest on the special tool 11 8 740 .
Keep turning the central bolt (1) until the sprocket has come loose from the high pressure pump shaft.
Press chain tensioner in with tensioning rail (1) by hand in the direction of the arrow until the special tool 11 3 340 can be positioned.
Remove chain tensioner.
Undo both bearing journals (1).
Remove guide rail (2).
Release bearing journal (4).
Remove tensioning rail (3).
Release screw (1).
Remove special tool 11 4 320 .
Remove impeller (1) with timing chain (2) from high pressure pump and crankshaft.
Remove timing chain (2).
Fit timing chain (1).
Position crankshaft with special tool 2 285 671 (crankshaft is in the 11° top dead center).
Fix special tool 2 285 671 via the fitting bush on the crankcase.
Installation note:
To check the 11° after top dead center .
Pistons on cylinders 1 and 4 must be approx. 0.5 to 1 mm below the contact surface.
Installation note:
Pay attention to the spline groove on the high pressure pump (1) (see arrow).
Installation note:
The marking on crankcase and groove on the high pressure pump must be in line (graphic N57).
Installation note:
Spline and marking (0) on pinion are on a single plane.
Position impeller (1) with timing chain (2) on high pressure pump.
Marking (0) and cast lug must be in line.
Insert central bolt (1) of high pressure pump.
Position slide rail (1).
Screw in bearing journals (2).
Tightening torque: 11 11 3AZ
Position guide rail (1).
Screw in bearing journals (2).
Tightening torque: 11 11 3AZ .
Position tensioning rail (3).
Screw in bearing journals (4).
The crankshaft must be blocked in order to secure the central bolt of the high pressure pump.
Remove special tool 11 4 120 on the chain tensioner.
Position special tool 2 285 671 on the crankcase.
Secure central bolt of high pressure pump.
Tightening torque: 13 52 2AZ
