51 21 170 Removing and installing or replacing outside door handle from left or right front door

Measure dimension aeon special tool 51 3 340 and mark accordingly (1).

"a" = 140 mm.

Lever seal plug (1) out of mounting hole (2).

NOTE: To avoid paintwork damage, use a suitable tool and tape off area around mounting hole.

For purposes of clarity, the following operations are shown with the component removed:

To raise retaining tab (2) of locking plate (1) over retaining rib (3)...

Insert special tool 51 3 340 from below, outside locking plate (2), along marked edge of carrier plate (1) up to point "X".

NOTE: If special tool 51 3 340 can only be slid in with difficulty from point "X" onwards, check the tool geometry per SI 01 32 09 (606).

For checking

Marking (1) on special tool 51 3 340 is flush with outer door panel.

Insert special tool 51 3 252 from above, as illustrated, along marked edge. Screw in tool hook inwards no later than at point "Y".

Continue to insert special tool 51 3 252 along marked edge. Here the special tool hook recedes into recess (2) of locking plate (1).

By pulling back, (see line guidance) special tool 51 3 252 engages in bore hole of locking plate (1).

Slide locking plate (1) with special tool 51 3 252 inwards up to stop "A".

Installation:

Special tool 51 3 340 is not needed for installation.

Locking plate retaining tab (1) must lock. It must no longer be possible to push locking plate (1) inwards.

Here locking plate (1) releases retaining hooks (arrowed) of outer door handle.

Lever out outer door handle (1) first at bottom. Then feed out at an angle towards bottom.

Installation:

Rotary striker lock must be open to enable outer door handle (1) to be correctly fed in. Ensure correct installation position.

Unfasten plug connection (1) and disconnect.

Installation:

Following parts on outer handle (4) must not be damaged or missing (graphic similar):

Seal
Guide
Rubber mount

Installation:

Carry out function check with door open.

To do so, close rotary striker lock by hand.
