Replacing gaiter for steering gear on left or right (X5 M)
CAUTION:
If the surface of the rack is damaged (e.g. owing to corrosion), the hydraulic steering gear must be replaced!
Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove TRACK ROD END .
- Remove BOTTOM STEERING BOX COVER .
Before removal, clean the track rod, gaiter and the area around the gaiter in order to prevent the ingress of dirt!
Release band clamp (1) and EAR CLIP (3).
Detach gaiter (2) from track rod.
Installation note:
Grease the track rod at the seat of the gaiter (1) with FB-1 lubricating grease, part number 2 208 093".
- This ensures that the gaiter is not rotated when the track rod is rotated.
Check the rack of the steering gear and surface for damage (e.g. due to corrosion).
Before installing the gaiter, lightly grease the steering gear at the seat of the gaiter with FB-1 lubricating grease.
Position the gaiter (2) on the steering gear.
Part: Release EAR CLIP (1).
Mount ear clamp (1).
After installation:
- Perform WHEEL ALIGNMENT .
