11 31 028 Replacing exhaust camshaft (N57 Diesel)

Special tools required: 

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Crank engine with special tool 11 6 480 to firing TDC position of cylinder no. 1.

IMPORTANT: Do not turn  the engine back.

Check position of exhaust and intake camshafts (see Fig 2).

Remove exhaust camshaft  .

NOTE: It is not necessary to adjust the engine timing in order to remove the exhaust camshaft.

Release bearing caps A1 to A7 by 1/2 a turn at a time, working from the outside inwards.

Feed exhaust camshaft upwards to remove.

Preparation for installation: 

Oil all bearing positions (1).

Check installation position of the roller cam followers (risk of damage.)  .

Install exhaust camshaft: 

Insert exhaust camshaft (1) marked with (A).

The marks on both camshafts (A and E) must agree when installing exhaust camshaft (A) (see Fig 7).

Fit all bearing caps A1 to A7.

The bearing caps can be read from the intake side.

Tighten bearing caps A1 to A7 by 1/2 a turn at a time on the camshaft carrier, working from the inside outwards.

Tightening torque: 11 31 2AZ .

Using special tool 11 6 480 , crank engine twice in direction of rotation until cylinder no. 1 is back in TDC firing position.

Check CAMSHAFT ADJUSTMENT .

IMPORTANT: Do not turn  the engine back.

Assemble engine.
