51 16 160 Removing and installing center console cover

Special tools required: 

When working on trim panel components, make sure that the sensitive surfaces are not scratched or damaged.

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Version with manual gearbox: 

NOTE: Any identical work steps are illustrated in automatic version.

For comparison:

Graphic shows center console trim for manual version.

Manual transmission version only: 

Pry gearshift lever cover (1) off of selector lever using special tool 00 9 325 .

NOTE: Always pry off starting from the side to prevent damaging the gearshift lever cover frame (1).

Open both center console armrests.

Lever out rear cover (1) with special tool 00 9 325 .

Installation note: 

Latch mechanisms (see arrows) on cover closure (1) may not be damaged.

Release screw (1).

Carefully pry out center console trim (1) with special tool 00 9 325 , while clamping it off and then removing in the direction indicated by the arrow.

Unlock and disconnect underlying plug connections.

Manual transmission version only: 

Carefully feed out gearshift lever cover through the center console trim opening (1).

Remove center console trim (1).

Installation note: 

Replace defective retainers (1).

Guide (2) must not be damaged.

Make sure center console trim is seated correctly.
