27 10 010 Removing and installing transfer box (ATC 35L)
Special tools required:
IMPORTANT:
Before and after replacement, execute the "Repair" service function with the BMW diagnosis system.
IMPORTANT:
After completion of repair work, CHECK TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL and top up if necessary.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the transfer box!

Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE .
- REMOVE rear underbody protection.
- Remove complete exhaust system . See 18 00 020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (N47 D16/20 K/U/O/T 1) , 18 00 020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (N20, N26) or 18 00 020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (N55) .
- Remove FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT .
- Remove heat shields.
- Partially remove propeller shaft

, 26 11 000 REMOVING AND REFITTING COMPLETE PROPELLER SHAFT (PUSH-FIT - FLEXIBLE JOINT AT REAR) (WITH VIBRATION ABSORBER)
or 26 11 000 REMOVING AND INSTALLING PROPELLER SHAFT (INSERTED) COMPLETELY

- Disconnect propeller shaft at transmission.
- Release center mount.
- Tie up propeller shaft to underbody.NOTE: Bending the propeller shaft by an excessive angle can cause premature damage to the joint/propeller shaft!
- Support gearbox with jack when removing the transfer box.
Release screws.
Remove transmission cross member.
Tightening torque 22 32 3AZ .
Tightening torque 22 32 6AZ .
Disconnect connector (1) from transfer box control unit (linear force module) (2).
Slightly lower gearbox.
Release screws (1).
Tightening torque 27 10 1AZ .
Take off transfer box (2).
Installation note:
Pay attention to dowel pin (1).
Grease dowel pin (1).
Apply a thin coat of grease to gearing.
Grease: WEICON ANTI-SEIZE.
