32 31 092 Removing and installing/replacing steering column
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Move steering column into "extended" position
- Disconnect BATTERY EARTH LEAD
- Remove airbag. See REMOVING AIRBAG UNIT (SPORT STEERING WHEEL) or REMOVING AIRBAG UNIT (M SPORTS STEERING WHEEL) .
- Remove steering wheel. See REMOVING SPORT STEERING WHEEL or REMOVING M SPORTS STEERING WHEEL .
- Remove upper and lower steering column shroud. See REMOVING UPPER SHROUD and REMOVING LOWER SHROUD .
- Remove STEERING COLUMN CONTROL PANEL
- Remove STEERING ANGLE SENSOR (Vehicles with active steering only)
- Remove TRIM PANEL FOR PEDAL MECHANISM
- Remove footwell air duct
Unplug electrical connectors (1) and unclip wiring loom from steering column.
Installation note:
Replace damaged wiring harness mounting.
Make sure wiring harness is in correct position.
Release clamping bolt (1) and slide shaft (2) into steering column.
Installation note:
Recut thread in steering spindle.
Replace clamping bolt.
Clamping screw must rest in groove of upper steering spindle.
No retorquing permitted!
Tightening torque 32 31 3AZ .
Loosen screws (3).
Tightening torque 32 31 1AZ .
Secure steering column against falling out.
Release screws (1).
Tightening torque 32 31 1AZ .
Remove steering column to the rear.
Installation note:
When inserting steering column, make sure guide (1) is correctly fitted in dashboard carrier.
After installation:
- Carry out adjustment steering angle sensor adjustment. See STEERING ANGLE SENSOR ADJUSTMENT or ACTIVE FRONT STEERING ADJUSTMENT .NOTE: The steering angle sensor calibration is integrated with "Active Front Steering Adjustment" for vehicles equipped with Active Front Steering.
- Carry out NORMALIZATION of electric steering column adjustment
- Turn steering wheel in both directions to the limit position. The airbag indicator light must not light up in the process.
- Check directional stability of vehicle
