51 23... Adjusting/replacing bump stops

Version 1: 

Following parts must not be damaged:

• (1) Bump stop

Adjust bump stop (1) to correct height by turning left or right.

Version 2: 

Replace damaged bump stops (refer to BMW Electronic Parts Catalogue):

• (1) Bump stop with ejector

Press ejector (1) into bump stop and, in this position, twist approx. 90° counterclockwise with a Phillips screwdriver.

This locks the ejectors (1) in the bump stops.

Adjust bump stop (2) to correct height by turning left or right.

Unlock the ejector (1) again after completing adjustment.

Version 3: 

Replace damaged bump stops (refer to BMW Electronic Parts Catalogue):

• (1) Bump stop

Turn lock (1) 45° counterclockwise.

Pull bump stop (2) upwards.

Close lid slowly until it is at the same height as the side panel.

Open lid and turn lock (1) clockwise.

Installation: 

Press bump stop into panel and drive in expanding pins (3).

Prerequisite: Lid must be correctly adjusted.

Following parts must not be damaged:

• (1) Bump stop
• (2) Catches

Remove adjusting buffer by pressing latch mechanisms back.

Screw in adjusting buffer (1) to create distance to engine compartment lid.

Place a cone (2) of modeling or sealing compound on adjusting buffer.

Slowly close engine compartment lid.

Raise engine compartment lid.

Compressed cone (1) determines distance between adjusting buffer and engine compartment lid.

Measure dimension a between compressed cone and edge (1) of adjusting buffer.

Adjust measured dimension a + 0.5 mm by unscrewing adjusting buffer (1).

Adjust stop pad (1) to correct height by turning left or right.

Version 2: 

Replace damaged stop pads (refer to BMW Electronic Parts Catalogue):

• (1) Bump stop

Adjusting version 2:

Stop (1) 45° anti-clockwise.

Pull stop pad (2) upwards.

Close lid slowly until it is at the same height as the side wall.

Open flap and turn stop (1) clockwise.

Installation note: 

Press stop pad into panel and drive in expanding pins (3).

Version 3: 

Lever out expanding rivets (1).

Remove stop pad (2).

Adjusting version 3:

Checking correct adjustment:

• Insert a strip of paper (normal writing paper) between stop pad and limit position on body.
• Close flap. Make sure that the paper strip remains between stop pad and limit position.
• The stop pad is correctly adjusted when the paper strip can be pulled out "with slight resistance".

Adjustment procedures 

Screw in stop pad until the paper strip can be easily pulled out.

Then unscrew stop pad until the paper strip cannot be pulled out any more.

Screw in stop pad until the paper strip can be pulled out with "slight" resistance.

Version 4: 

Lever out expanding rivets (1).

Remove stop pad (2).

Adjusting version 4:

Set stop pad to the correct height by turning to the left or right.

Release screws (1) and remove stop pad (2).
