11 37 550 Removing and installing/replacing a Valvetronic torsion spring (S63)

Special tools required: 

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

IMPORTANT: Danger of injury!
Safety goggles and protective gloves required.

Twist engine at central bolt so that it is suitable for dismantling.

Position intake camshaft (2) horizontally (see arrow).

Set intermediate shaft (1) to zero lift (see arrow).

Release screw of torsion spring.

Remove special tool 2 249 160 with torsion spring.

Clamp special tool 2 249 160 in vice.

IMPORTANT: The special tool is under preload.

Operating lever must be pre-tensioned in direction of arrow so that special tool 2 249 160 can be opened.

Relieve tension on special tool 2 249 160 .

Remove torsion spring from special tool 2 249 160 and place on special tool 11 4 480 in an orderly fashion.

Installation note: 

Engage torsion spring (1) on special tool 2 249 160 .

IMPORTANT: Retaining plate must be positioned in engagement lugs on special tool 2 249 160 .

Insert torsion spring (1) on special tool 2 249 160 and secure.

Attach both ends of torsion spring in the rollers of special tool 2 249 160 .

Pretension torsion spring with special tool 2 249 160 .

IMPORTANT: Special tool 2 249 160 must engage with rotary lever (1) in engagement groove so that torsion spring is securely pre-tensioned.

Position special tool 2 249 160 with torsion spring on cylinder head.

Secure torsion spring.

Tightening torque: 11 37 3AZ .

Unlock locking button (1) on special tool 2 249 160 and release in direction of arrow.

Remove special tool.

Assemble engine.
