Electric machine
An electrical machine and separation clutch are integrated in the automatic transmission. The are located behind the torsional vibration damper. Together with the torsional vibration damper, the electrical machine and separation clutch use the installation space of the hydraulic torque converter.
The electrical machine has the following functions:
- Starting the combustion engine
- Support for the combustion engine (boost)
- Electrical driving
- Electrical braking (energy recovery)
- Alternator

The electrical machine follows an internal rotor design. "Internal rotor" means that the rotor with the permanent magnets is arranged in an inner ring structure. The coils that generate the rotating field are outside and form the stator. The electrical machine has 16 pin pairs.
The high-voltage connection is used to supply electrical energy to the coils of the electrical machine. The high-voltage connection connects the electrical machine electronics (EME) with the electrical machine using a three-phase shielded high-voltage line.
Attention!
High-voltage cables must not be repaired. If damaged, a cable must always be
completely replaced.
The electrical machine has an additional 2nd plug connection. This is used for the connection of the sensor system. The sensor system on the electrical machine includes a rotor position sensor and a temperature sensor.
The rotor position sensor records the exact position of the rotor or the electrical machine. The structure of the rotor position sensor is similar to a synchronizing machine. The rotor position sensor as a specially shaped rotor that is connected with the rotor of the electrical machine. The stator is connected to the stator of the electrical machine. The voltages that are induce by rotating the rotor in the coils is evaluated by the electrical machine electronics (EME). The motor position angle is thereby calculated.
The coils of the electrical machine must not exceed a certain temperature during operation. This is why a representative temperature in one of the coils is measured using a temperature sensor.
The electrical machine electronics EME evaluate the signals form the temperature sensor and reduce the power output of the electrical machine if the temperature of the coils approaches maximum permitted value.
